    • A method of making a 3-alkylcycloalkanol of formula 2: where R1 represents a methyl or ethyl group, R2 represents hydrogen, R3 represents an ethyl, propyl, butyl, isobutyl or isoamyl group, R4 represents hydrogen and R5 represents hydrogen, or a methyl, ethyl, propyl, isobutyl or isoamyl group comprises the following steps: (1) carrying out an electrophilic substitution reaction of an alkyl group or precursor thereof, on an ortho-substituted alkylbenzene compound of formula 3: where R6 represents hydrogen, or a methyl or ethyl group; (2) hydrogenating the reaction product of step (1); (3) performing an elimination reaction on one or more reaction products of step (2) to produce one or more alkene products; and (4) hydrating the one or more alkene products of step (3) to provide a 3-alkylcycloalkanol of formula 2. The electrophilic substitution reaction of step (1) may be a Friedel-Crafts acylation, e.g. using an isopropyl ketone precursor, or a Friedel-Crafts alkylation, e.g. using an isobutyl group. The 3-alkylcycloalkanols, especially 3-(2-methylpropyl)-1-methylcyclohexanol, are useful fragrance materials and find use in perfumes and perfumed products.

    • The invention concerns a process for preparing S-methylmercapto and mercapto compounds comprising the step of demethylating a dimethylsulfonium compound of formula (I) to the corresponding S-methylmercapto compound of formula (II), using a microorganism or alga which is capable of demethylating 3-dimethylsulphoniumpropionate (DMSP) to S-methyl-3-mercaptopropionate (MMPA), but which is incapable of further demethylating the latter compound to 3-mercapto-proportionate with the same speed, or using an enzyme preparation derivable from such microorganism or alga. Preferably the group R denotes CH2-CH2-COOH (I is DMSP), CH2-CH(NH2)-COOH (I is S-dimethyl-cystein), CH2-CH2-CH(NH2)-COOH (I is S-methyl-methionine) or CH2-COOH (I is 2-dimethylsulphoniumacetate), or a salt or ester of any of these. Preferably the microorganisms are marine Desulfobacterium strains, especially a Desulfobacterium autotrophicum, Desulphobacterium vacuolatum or similar strain.

    • The invention relates to a process for separating ketones from alcohols by chemical interaction. More specifically, a difference in chemical reactivity between ketones and alcohols with a third compound is used as a basis for the separation. The third compound in this case is an organo-metallic compound of the general formula M(X) n . Herein is M a polyvalent metal atom, n equals the valence of the metal and X is an organic or inorganic group or atom, with the proviso that at least one organic group is present in the organo-metallic compounds according to the invention. If the ketone-alcohol mixture is subjected to the organo-metallic compounds according to the invention under suitable conditions, an exchange reaction between the alcohols and the groups X takes place, and the ketones can be isolated from the reaction mixture in a conventional way.
