    • A cryostat assembly comprising: a thermal shield (2); and a cooling system including a cold member (3); an adsorption pump assembly (17A) including a pumping chamber (50) containing a working fluid, and an adsorption pump in fluid communication with the pumping chamber. A first switch (H52) selectively, thermally connecting the adsorption pump (17A) to the thermal shield (2) so as to cause the working fluid to desorb from the adsorption pump. A second switch selectively, thermally connecting (100) the adsorption pump (17A) to the cold member (3) so as to cause the working fluid to be adsorbed by the adsorption pump. A thermal link couples the pumping chamber to the cold member to condense at least a portion of the working fluid desorbed from the adsorption pump (150), wherein during adsorption of the working fluid evaporates to cause the temperature within the pumping chamber to fall below cold member temperature.

    • Apparatus for use in a nuclear magnetic resonance system comprises a cryostat including a coolant vessel (3) containing coolant such as liquid helium (4) and a refrigerator (8) for cooling coolant in the coolant vessel, the cryostat surrounding a sample space (10). A superconducting coil (2) is located in the coolant vessel (3) for generating a B0 magnetic field in the sample space (10). Rf magnetic field generating and receiving apparatus (14) is located adjacent the sample space. A closed coolant loop (16) contains coolant such as helium which is cooled by the refrigerator (8), and a pump (20) for circulating the coolant around the loop. The coolant loop (16) is thermally coupled with the rf apparatus (14) so as to cool the rf apparatus.
