    • A secondary release mechanism for a vehicle hood latch has a pivotally mounted secondary latch (12) which is rotatable between a latching position and an unlatching position and biased towards the latching position. A pivotally mounted release arm (26) is rotatable between a retracted position, a deployed position and a releasing position and biased to the standby position. A pivotally mounted release lever (20) is rotatable between a release position, a standby position and a retract position . The release lever (20) has a cam surface (22) for engaging a hood of the vehicle as the hood moves between the fully latched condition and a secondary latched condition responsively rotating the release lever (20) between the standby position and the retract position. The release lever (20) operably engages the secondary latch (12) as the release lever (20) rotates from the standby position to the release position. The release arm (26) engages the release lever (20) wherein responsive movement of the release lever (20) between the standby position to the retract position responsively effects movement of the release arm (26) between the deployed position and the retracted position and movement of the release arm (26) from the deployed position to the releasing position responsively effects movement of the release lever (20) rotating the secondary latch (12) from the latching position to the unlatching position.

    • A self-releasing clutch assembly for locking a vehicle door lock. The clutch assembly (11) includes a servo-actuated input drive and a cinching output drive. A gear shaped first actuator (42) is mounted to the input drive. A cylindrical second actuator (44) is mounted to the output drive and is moveable relative to the first actuator. Four pairs of rollers (50) are interdisposed between the first and second actuators and moveable between a disengaged position and an engaged position. With the disengaged position, the rollers rest against the first actuator and allowing the second actuator to rotate relative thereto. With the engaged position, the rollers interlock the first and second actuators for relative concurrent movement. The clutch assembly is characterized by the first actuator including four driving surfaces (43) and the second actuator including four corresponding abutments (48). The driving surfaces engage and move the rollers from the disengaged position to the engaged position in response to movement by the input drive. The abutments then lock the rollers between the first and second actuators to couple the input drive with the output drive thereby transferring the movement of the input drive to the output drive. The subject invention also includes a biasing device (54) for automatically returning the rollers to the disengaged position when the driving force from the first actuator ceases.

    • A hood latch assembly (10) has a housing (14) having a mouth (13). A ratchet (16) is pivotally mounted within the housing (14) to cooperate with the mouth (13) to pivot between an open, a secondary closed and a primary closed condition for receiving, engaging and cinching a keeper of a striker (80). The ratchet (16) is biased to the open condition. A pivotally mounted primary pawl (18) is biased for engagement with the ratchet (16) to releasably retain the ratchet (16) in the primary closed condition. A pivotally mounted secondary pawl (62) is biased for engagement with the ratchet (16) to releasably retain the ratchet (16) in the secondary closed condition. The secondary pawl (62) has a release lever (20) which rotates between a deployed position and a retracted position. As the ratchet (16) engages the striker (80), the ratchet (16) will rotate in a latching sense from the open condition to the secondary closed condition. As the ratchet (16) further rotates from the secondary closed to the primary closed condition, fully engaging the striker (80), the secondary pawl (62) follows the ratchet (16), allowing the release lever (20) to rotate from a deployed position to a retracted position. Upon release of the primary engagement by disengaging the primary pawl (18), the ratchet (16) will rotate from the primary closed to the secondary closed condition. The secondary pawl (62) will follow the ratchet (16) rotating the release lever (20) from the retracted position to the deployed position. The operator then manipulates the release lever (20) to release the ratchet (16), allowing the ratchet (16) to rotate from the secondary closed to the open condition. The hood latch (10) has a light (82) which is operable responsive to movement of the release arm (20) moving from the retracted position and the deployed position. Changes of the hood latch (10) between the primary closed condition and the secondary closed condition will open and close the switch (78). The switch (78) is disposed between a light source (82) mounted to illuminate the hood latch (10) region and a source of electrical power. Opening and closing of the switch (78) will responsively illuminate the light (82).
