摘要： A container system (10A) including a vessel (20A) for holding a thixotropic semi-solid aluminum alloy slurry during its processing as a billet (60A) and an ejection system for cleanly discharging the processed thixotropic semi-solid aluminum billet (60A). The crucible (20A) is preferably formed from a chemically and thermally stable material (such as graphite or a ceramic). The crucible (20A) defines a mixing volume (30A). The crucible ejection mechanism may include a movable bottom portion (22A) mounted on a piston (56A) or may include a solenoid coil for inducing an electromotive force in the electrically conducting billet for urging it from the crucible (20A). During processing, a molten aluminum alloy precursor is transferred into the crucible and vigorously stirred and controlledly cooled to form a thixotropic semi-solid billet (60A). Once the billet (60A) is formed, the ejection mechanism is activated to discharge the billet (60A) from the crucible (20A). The billet (60A) is discharged into a shot sleeve and immediately placed in a mold and molded into a desired form.

摘要： A thermal jacket (30) for use in the production of a semi-solid slurry billet. The thermal jacket (30) includes symmetrical halves (30a, 30b), each having a heat transfer surface (50) extending between a pair of longitudinal edges (54a, 54b). An actuator mechanism (32) engages the heat transfer surfaces (50) into intimate contact with a vessel (20) containing metallic melt to effectuate conductive heat transfer, with the longitudinal edges (54a, 54b) being disposed in a generally opposite, spaced relationship. The thermal jacket (30) includes a plurality of cooling air passageways (120, 122) for extracting heat from the metallic melt, and a plurality of electric heating elements (132) for adding heat to the metallic melt. The cooling rate of the metallic melt is controlled within a range of about 0.1 to 10 degrees Celsius/second by regulating the flow of cooling air and the activation of the heating elements (132). Fluid manifolds (104, 106) are disposed at opposite ends of the thermal jacket (30) to distribute and direct the flow of cooling air.

摘要： An apparatus for processing feed stock into a thixotropic state. The apparatus includes a barrel with first, second and nozzle sections. The first, second and nozzle sections are connected together and include surfaces that cooperatively define a central passageway through the barrel. The first section is constructed of a first material, the second end section is constructed of a second material and the nozzle is constructed of a third material. The first material exhibits a greater resistance to thermal fatigue and thermal shock than the second material while the nozzle section includes a bushing which inhibits heat transfer to the die, precluding excessive molding pressures and cycle times. The apparatus also includes a preheater for preheating the feed stock before entry into the barrel, a thermal gradient monitoring system, a novel robust nozzle construction, and a two-stage embodiment of the apparatus.
