    • Electronic game apparatus for determining the presence and optionally the identity of playing pieces. Each playing piece (10) is provided with a resonator circuit, which may be tuned so that each playing piece or type of piece has a unique resonant frequency. The board is provided with transmit and receive coils (4,6), to stimulate the resonator circuit of a piece and to sense the resonant signal respectively. An amplifier is provided between the two sets of coils to amplify the signal around the loop. A resonant signal results if a playing piece is placed on the square being tested. The frequency of this signal is detected and may then be determined and the piece identified.

    • An instructional chess game comprises a square playing board (1) of laminated construction having sixty-four individual playing squares (2) each of which is formed centrally with a substantially square opening surrounded by a corresponding "black" or "white" liner (4), the upper layer (3) of the board (1) preferably being of natural wood. The base (26, 38) of each of at least some of a conventional number of playing pieces will not fit any lined opening of the board (1) if said piece is facing in a direction that is not allowed by the traditional rules of chess and each playing piece (23, 28) is animated in such a way that, upon manipulation of its head (17), a spring loaded arm member (20) will cause a weapon (24) to strike a neighbouring and opposing playing piece or such manipulation will cause a projectile (31) to be fired by the sudden release of a spring-loaded and pivotted lever (34) after movement thereof to a cocked or firing position by a progressive displacement and sudden release cam (33). A video chess game is also described during which a substantially conventional chess board is visually represented and similarly represented playing pieces are shown to attack one another by striking each other or by launching projectiles, laser beams or the like at one another, the attacked and visually represented playing pieces collapsing/disintegrating before finally vanishing and being replaced by the attacking playing pieces with suitable sound effects.

    • Implementation of a new variant of chess characterized because it has the following elements: a central processing unit for storing a database of reference, a database of reference created from all recorded chess games in history divided by categories, a selection and filtering process based on a specific algorithm that selects one single game in order to stablish the initial position of the new game, a chess software for installation in any device, electronic devices to play the new game online and unlimited number of users to play the game live; and because the starting position of the game is determined at random just before the start of play, being unknown by the players until the beginning of play and wherein the procedure for obtaining that initial position consists of setting a certain specified number of full moves, said number being called depth, from the starting position of classical chess and being the depths numbers all up to 10 and either integers, except 0, or the result of adding an integer plus 0.5; selecting at random one game from a single reference database made of high-skill human classical chess play and regularly updated; and initiating the game from the initial position the player with the white pieces if the depth number is an integer, otherwise the black pieces would initiate the game.
