    • A data receiver for receiving data including multi-component singals representing symbols selected from a set of multi-component, multi-value symbols such as 16-QAM, 64-QAM or 256-QAM symbols. Each component of the signals denotes values for a plurality of bits, each bit being associated with one component of the signal. The receiver is arranged to set a value of a bit metric for each bit denoted by each signal based upon the value of the signal component associated with that bit. The bit metrics are selected so that when the signal component is in a first range, the bit metric is at a maximum; when the signal component is in a second range, the bit metric is at a minimum, whereas the signal component is in a third range, the bit metric has an intermediate value between the minimum and maximum values. The bit metric represents the probability that the receive signal represents a symbol denoting a particular value of the bit. The bit metrics can be subjected to bit-level processes such as bit insertion and bit diffusion reversal and the sequences of bit metrics can be subjected to maximum likelihood decoding schemes such as Viterbi decoding to deconvolute a convolutional code.

    • A method and system are provided for the transmission and reception of an In-band On-channel (IBOC) FM-band digital audio broadcast (DAB) signal. The IBOC DAB signal (63) is generated in the transmitter (47, 49) to occupy the upper and lower sideband frequency regions (11, 13) in the RF emission mask for the conventional broadcast analog FM-band. Redundant source bit information is transmitted in upper and lower sidebands so that the loss of information in either one but not both sidebands due to large amount of interference or distortion does not deleteriously affect the IBOC DAB receiver performance. The system exhibits frequency-diversity and time-diversity. The receiver (231, 233) determines which codeword bit estimate of upper or lower sideband signal is less erroneous. The receiver system selects between decoded estimates for each pair of demodulated ECC codewords or combines both ECC codeword estimates prior to decoding in certain embodiments.

    • The present invention improves quality of communication in a transmission and reception system, a transmission and reception device, and a method of transmission and reception, which utilize primarily a combination of punctured-convolution-coding and diversity. Degradation in likelihood of certain data is prevented by adopting the steps of (a) punctured-convolution-coding an identical information data 121 by using a plurality of different puncturing patterns 102a and 102b, (b) diversity-transmitting each of different series of punctured data obtained in step (a) as diversity branches, (c) depuncturing the series of punctured data individually in a receiving device 110 by using identical puncturing patterns 102a and 102b as used in the transmission side, and (d) compounding and convolution-decoding them thereafter.
