Magnet means (82) are carried by an outer surface of the rotor carrying portion of the spindle hub, and stator means (92, 94) having a plurality of fixed windings are arranged for co-operating with the magnet means to rotate the spindle hub with respect to the shaft.

The rotor magnet member (6) is secured to the inner peripheral surface or ceiling of the rotor. Either a radial or axial gap is provided between the stator coil and the rotor magnet member.

    • A data recording disk file includes a disk stack subassembly (10) and a linear actuator (16), both of which are supported by a unitary structure (18) which forms part of the disk file housing. The structure is symmetric about two perpendicular planes (A-A; B-B) and includes an open-ended portion (20) and an actuator portion (22). The disk stack subassembly, which includes an in-hub motor, is entirely supported in the open-ended portion by two parallel interior walls which are equally spaced from the first plane of the structure. The linear actuator is entirely supported in the actuator portion by two parallel side walls which are equally spaced from the second plane of the casting. The actuator is mounted to the side walls in its plane of symmetry, which coincides with the first plane of the casting, and with its linear access axis coincident with the intersection of the two planes. The disk file housing is made complete by an end cap (24) which attaches to the open-ended portion of the casting to enclose the disk stack subassembly, and by cover plates (26,28) and a casting end wall which enclose the actuator.

    • A bearing and magnetic fluid seal assembly includes a shaft mounted by axially spaced-apart bearings (52-54) for rotation relative to a housing (50). A magnetic fluid seal includes an annular magnet (60) axially positioned between the bearings (52-54) in the space (58) that is wasted and not utilized for any purpose, and a thin, disk-like annular polepiece (162) positioned between one of the bearings (52-54) and the environment to be protected by the seal. Magnetic flux from the magnet (60) is conducted by a magnetically permeable housing (50) or shaft (42) to an annular gap between the outside diameter of the polepiece (162) and the housing (50). A magnetic fluid (164) is retained in the gap by the magnetic flux, thereby providing an exclusion seal. Embodiments utilizing radially and axially polarized magnets are provided. A magnetic fluid seal can be provided at each end of the assembly. The bearings (52-54) supporting the shaft (42) can be magnetically permeable or nonmagnetic. The seal(s) can be electrically conducting or nonconducting depending upon the type of ferrofluid (164) used.
