    • A minimally invasive intravascular medical device for providing a radiation treatment in a body passageway such as a coronary vessel of the vascular system. The device includes a flexible elongated member having distal and proximal portions. The distal portion is percutaneously insertable into a vessel and includes a distal end that is directable through the vessel to the treatment site. A radiation source is attached about the distal portion for delivering a radiation treatment to the walls a vessel having a stent positioned thereagainst. The distal portion of the elongated member includes a wire coil positioned about the tapered distal end of a mandril wire. The combination of the wire coil and the tapered distal end of the mandril wire provides variable flexibility to the distal portion of the device. The distal portion also has a predetermined curvature for directing the distal end of the device through the vessel. A safety wire is also extendable through the passageway of the wire coil to provide further flexibility to the distal portion. The radiation source is fixedly positioned about either the tapered distal end of the mandril wire or the safety wire in the passageway of the wire coil. An annular recess is included about the tapered distal end of the mandril wire to fixedly position a source of radioactive material therein.

    • A system for delivery of radiation to a target portion of a native tissue is provided. The system includes a catheter having a main catheter body. The main catheter body includes an outer catheter surface and an inner catheter surface that defines a longitudinally oriented lumen. The lumen extends between longitudinally spaced proximal and distal catheter face surfaces extending laterally between the inner and outer catheter surfaces. A sheath covers at least a portion of the outer catheter surface. The sheath includes a tapered portion protruding substantially longitudinally distally from a portion of the distal catheter face surface. A plurality of tubes extends through the lumen towards the distal catheter face surface. Each tube of the plurality of tubes is configured to selectively guide exposure of a radiation source to the target portion of the native tissue.

    • Systems and methods are provided for treating cervical and/or uterine cancers in brachytherapy with an intracavitary brachytherapy applicator. The system comprises a tandem adapted for insertion into a cervix of a patient. An ovoid assembly comprises first and second inflatable ovoids and an ovoid support mechanism. The first and second inflatable ovoids are adapted for insertion within fornices of a patient. First and second retractors are adapted to be coupled to the ovoid assembly. The first retractor is adapted to be positioned to retract the bladder of a patient during treatment. The second retractor is adapted to be positioned to retract the rectum of a patient during treatment. The tandem and the first and second inflatable ovoids are adapted to be coupled to a radioactive source to deliver an implant radiation dose suitable for cancer treatment at a cancerous cervical treatment site in a patient.

    • The invention is a catheter (10) for use with a radioactive source (16) within the catheter (10) to irradiate a selected area of a blood vessel in combination with angioplasty procedures, to prevent restenosis of that area of the vessel. The catheter (10) has a guidewire channel (18) formed near its distal end to facilitate use of the cather (10) as a rapid exchange catheter, allowing insertion of the catheter (10) over a guidewire (20). The catheter (10) has a radiation lumen (14) with a sealed end to retain the radioactive source (16) within the catheter (10). The radiation lumen (14) is sufficiently longer than the guidewire channel (18), keeping the radiation source (16) segregated from the blood, allowing the use of a non-sterile radiation source. The catheter (10) can be provided with a balloon (22) or a set of wire loops (50) to center the radioactive source (16) radially within the blood vessel.
