    • Disclosed is a connector, which is provided in a IC card body, wherein a socket or a jack is inserted in a direction that is parallel to the face of an IC card. According to the present invention, provided on an IC card body 302 is a flat plate member 305 incorporating a rotatable housing 306, which has an opening 312 by which a socket or a jack can be fitted, that is attached to the flat plate member 305. With this structure, when a socket or a jack is not connected to the IC card, the flat plate member 305 lies level along the face of the IC card; but when a socket is to be connected, the housing 306 of the flat plate member is raised so as to be almost perpendicular to the face of the IC card. The socket or the jack can therefore be inserted parallel to the face of the IC card, and even when an adjacent IC card is loaded, interference with that IC card is minimal.

    • A PC card consists of a PC card section and a casing section with a built-in electronic circuit provided at one end of the PC card section, and the PC card section and the casing section are integrated into a single structure. At the other end of the PC card section is provided a female interface connector, and in the connecting part between the PC card section and the casing section is arranged an elastic protective member. By inserting the PC card section into a slit section of a compact data terminal and connecting the female interface connector to a male interface connector, the PC card is actuated. In this configuration, when the PC card is inserted into the terminal, the protective member prevents the connecting part from being damaged by any force working on the casing section.

    • The memory cards (10) described herein have printed circuit boards (30) comprising a frame (20) for housing the printed circuit board (30) in the memory cards (10), covers (70, 80) in sealing engagement with the frame (20) for securing the printed circuit board (30) to the frame (20), and tabs (110) integrally attached to the covers (70,80) for grounding the printed circuit boards (30) to the memory cards (10). The memory cards (10) described herein provide efficient grounding of printed circuit boards, thereby allowing the memory cards to operate with good signal characteristics. The cards (10) further comprise connectors (40) adapted to mate with a printed circuit board for interfacing data from the printed circuit board (30) to an outside environment which will utilize the memory card, lateral receiving pockets (50) on a frame (2) in the memory card for locking the connector to the frame and providing structural integrity to the memory cards, and interlocking tabs (60) integrally disposed on the connector and further adapted to mechanically interface with the lateral receiving pockets for securely locking the connector to the frame and providing structural integrity to the memory card when the connector is mounted to the printed circuit board and mated to the frame.

    • An extension module 40 is provided for tandem connection to a base circuit card 1 having an external sheet material jacket 4 girding said card. The module includes a module housing 4a, 4b and a pair of spaced apart parallel support fingers 45 extending from the housing. The outer sides of said support fingers are configured for slidable insertion into corresponding spaced apertures 50 in the rearward end of the base circuit card to engage inner surfaces of the jacket adjacent opposite side edges of the jacket of the card. An electrical connector 49 is located between the support fingers and is adapted for mating connection with a corresponding electrical connector 3 located at the rearward end of the base circuit card, when the extension module is connected to the base circuit card. When the extension module is connected to the base circuit card by substantially full insertion of the support fingers into the base circuit card the engagement of said jacket embracing the fingers rigidly joins the extension module to the base card to form an integral extended circuit card.

    • A PCMCIA smart card reader with no protruding portion, with a stable mechanical design, allowing space for additional functions to be included in the PCMCIA card and that eases the insertion of a smart card. A thin support is formed between a thin upper section and a lower section of the PCMCIA smart card reader at an opening forming a smart card slot. The support is outside the smart card slot, but positioned within the PCMCIA slot and is preferably an integrated part of a PCMCIA card top cover. Since the support guides the smart card laterally at the opening of the smart card slot, only a small portion of the smart card has to be inserted into the PCMCIA card. The limited insertion of the smart card and the location of contacts for interfacing with the smart card in the thin upper section of the smart card reader, creates space for other functions to be included in the PCMCIA card, for example, a modem. The smart card insertion is eased by a removable extension supporting the smart card vertically during the insertion of the smart card. The removable extension may be a cable connection plug.
