摘要： A method for increasing the permeability of wood which comprises subjecting wood with a moisture content (based on dry weight) of at least 15 % to microwave radiation at a frequency (f) in the range of from about 0.1 to about 24 GHz with a power intensity (p) from about 10 W/cm2 to about 100 kW/cm2 for a duration of from about 0.05 to about 600 seconds to cause water in the wood to vaporise resulting in an internal pressure in the wood such that the permeability of the wood is increased by partial or complete destruction of ray cell tissue, softening and displacement of wood resin, formation of pathways in the radial direction of the wood and/or by creating, on the base of destroyed rays, cavities in the wood, said cavities being primarily in radial-longitudinal planes of the wood, and wherein the overall integrity of the wood is substantially maintained. A wood-based material may be formed having a permeability which is at least 5 times that of the untreated wood.

摘要： The invention relates to a device for applying microwaves to materials and individual items, which has the following features: (a) a particularly multimode microwave chamber is provided which has at least one charging passage with a sealing device; (b) at least one section of the microwave chamber and the sealing device are mounted to be movable in relation to each other, and a preferably motor-driven setting device for shifting between the closed and the open position is provided. Devices of the said type are common knowledge in the prior art and are used for the most diverse industrial applications, inter alia for heating, in particular drying of, e.g. moulds and cores in foundry practice, and also for triggering and controlling reactive processes such as the curing of plastics and the like. Consequently, the space required not only by the microwave installations per se, in particular the microwave chambers (MK1, MK2), but also by the associated charging devices is essential in the industrial applications. For the purpose of obtaining continuous processes which are rational, the str uctural adaptation of the chambers with the charging passages (BDL1, BDL2) thereof to the different parameters of the process, the items to be handled, and the working environment is particularly important.

摘要： An insulated glass unit (20) comprises two sheets of glass separated by spacers, a thermosetting resin sealant such as a polysulphide or polyurethane sealant or a hot melt butyl sealant being applied around the edges of the unit to seal the sheets together. Curing or melt-bonding of the sealant is accelerated by the application of microwave energy, suitably by passing the unit through a tunnel (26) with microwave generators (30) on each side thereof. The unit passes through the tunnel on a conveyor (28), held upright by pinch chains (32). The conveyor and pinch chains are made of a nonpolar material such as polypropylene.
