    • A method and apparatus for reconstructing a spectrum realizable in a medium from signals of a color scanner, includes the steps of obtaining an initial spectrum using a linear vector-space representation of the medium spectra, projecting the initial spectrum onto a logarithmic vector-space representation of the medium spectra to obtain an initial set of coordinates in the logarithmic vector-space and modifying the initial coordinates in an iterative convergence loop until a solution criterion is met. The solved coordinates are then transformed into spectrum using the logarithmic vector-space representation and subsequently may be transformed into colorimetric values. The method and apparatus of this invention thus enable conversion of color scanner signals into colorimetric values. This is accomplished without modification of the prevailing scanner elements. In one embodiment, the method comprises selecting a specific medium and a specific scanner, constructing a medium model for the selected medium, constructing a scanner model for the selected scanner, iteratively using the media model and the scanner model to solve for a spectral function representative of a color input, and converting the spectral function into a colorimetric value representative of the color input. The method may be performed in a digital processing system including a memory, a processor such as a CPU, a scanner for receiving the medium and scanning the media to provide the color input, and a printer for reproducing the colorimetric value.

    • An improved method of producing positive photographic prints in hybrid photofinishing system employing a digital image printer to produce an intermediate negative image on a non-photographic medium wherein digital data used to print the negative includes code values simulating an orange mask effect in the negative. The improvement in the method involves a reduction in the orange mask values in the digital data so as to reduce the D-max values required for digitally printing the intermediate negative thereby reducing print cost and throughput time in the process. In a further improvement, the printer code values for pixels corresponding to full white in the final image are forced to values that print as black in the negative thereby eliminating the orange mask effect for these pixels and rendering improved rendition of full white areas in the final image print.

    • A technique for improving the tone and color reproduction of print and slide images which are photographed onto color negative film, scanned by a Photo CD negative scanner and transferred onto Photo CD discs is disclosed. The technique incorporates a calibration method for (1) producing color negatives (or slides) using normal scanner calibration targets, (2) producing controlled prints from the negatives, (3) re-photographing the prints (or slides) onto a second color negative film, and (4) performing the normal scanner calibration using this second "cascaded" film. The calibration step not only "compensates for" the second color negative film (as is the case when calibrating for "normal" film exposed from the original scenes) but also "compensates for" the first negative film "print through" (or slide) characteristics. This means that the image data recorded on the Photo CD disc will more closely resemble the data which would be produced if the original scene had been photographed on color negative film and scanned directly.
