    • Wideband phased array antennas (60;320;360) are provided that eliminate the need for phase shifters in the region of the array face. In addition, they generate less beam squint than conventional antennas. In one embodiment, they include an electronic signal generator (62), reference and scanning manifolds (64,66) and an array of n radiative modules (70). The signal generator (62) generates a variable-frequency scanning signal (s s ) and a reference signal (s r ) wherein the frequency of the reference signal (s r ) is substantially a selected one of the sum and the difference of the frequencies of the scanning signal (s s ) and an operating signal (s o ). The reference manifold (64) receives and divides the reference signal (s r ) into n reference signal samples which are progressively time delayed by a selectable one of m reference differential time delays (Δt r ). The scanning manifold (66) receives and divides the scanning signal (s s ) into n scanning signal samples which are progressively time delayed by a scanning differential time delay (Δt s ). Each of the radiative modules (70) includes a mixing device (92), an electromagnetic radiator (90) and a filter (94). The mixing device (92) receives and mixes a respective one of the reference signal samples and a respective one of the scanning signal samples.

    • An adaptive nulling communication system for nulling undesired signals from communication signals in multiple separate and distinct coverage areas is disclosed. The adaptive nulling communication system includes a phased array antenna having multiple receiving elements to form a single aperture for receiving multiple signals. A first set of beam forming networks coupled to the phased array antenna forms the multiple separate and distinct coverage areas. A distribution network coupled to the first set of beam forming networks distributes the signals received from these coverage areas. A nulling processor having a second beam forming network coupled to the distribution network weights and adjusts the second beam forming network in response to the undesired signals to null these undesired signals from the communication signals.

    • An antenna beam forming system (10) for generating a set of directed beams wherein each beam may include carrier signals of more than one frequency is disclosed herein. The beam forming system includes a first beam forming network (20) for providing a first set of signals. The first beam forming network (20) includes a plurality of phase shifting elements (22) for providing a first phase relationship among the first set of signals in response to a first carrier signal of a first frequency. The system (10) further includes a second beam forming network (30) for providing a second set of signals. The second beam forming network includes a plurality of phase shifting elements (32) for again providing the first phase relationship among the second set of signals in response to a second carrier signal of a second frequency. An array of summing elements (40) for summing respective signals of the first and second sets of signals is included to provide a third set of signals. The third set of signals is transmitted by a phased array antenna (60) thereby providing first and second contemporaneous beams which overlap at a common surface.
