摘要： A recording medium containing multimedia data streams is managed. Portions corresponding to a predetermined playback time in a first image and voice data are managed as first units (EU). Minimum units of data of the first unit (EU), which can be reproduced independently, are managed as second units (VU). The first units (EU) have the same playback time, while the second units (VU) have the same playback time. Position information about the second unit (VU) in the recording medium is considered to be management information about each of the second units. The position information about the first unit (EU) on the recording medium is determined according to the position information about the second unit (VU) on the recording medium.

摘要： A technique is provided for enabling an index to data recorded in a recording medium such as a cassette to be read out without mounting the recording medium on a reproduction apparatus to reproduce the data. When a cassette (100) is inserted into a compartment in a VTR (41), a switch in the VTR is pushed by a case of the cassette, detecting the insertion of the cassette into the compartment. At that time, a signal indicating the insertion of the cassette into the compartment is supplied to a microcomputer from the switch. Notified by the signal, the microcomputer issues a command to a reader/writer, requesting the reader/writer to read out information on data from a memory card mounted on the cassette for recording the data through an antenna. With the cassette located outside the compartment, on the other hand, the microcomputer issues a command to a reader/writer, requesting the reader/writer to read out the information from the memory card through another antenna.

It may comprise a control processor which receives data representing the request for the audio/video material item via the communications network. A reproducing processor is operable in response to signals identifying the audio/video material items from the control processor to reproduce the audio/video material items. The data identifying the audio/video material items includes meta data indicative of the audio/video material items. The meta data may be one of UMID, tape ID and time codes, and a Unique Material Identifier the material items. It comprises an activity detector and a meta data generator coupled to the activity detector which is operable to generate sample images at temporal positions within the audio/video signal.

The electromagnetic coupling means is built in the memory or disposed in an annular or spiral form on the disk. The transmission frequency band for data transaction and power supply is set outside the main information reproduction frequency band. The memory is disposed in or on an appropriate plastic layer of the disk depending on the usage of the disk, and located in the inner or outer section of the recording medium forming area on the disk depending on the transmission band. This low-cost optical disk can be manufactured at a high reliability and high yield.
