    • An electrosurgical forceps is provided and includes a housing, a shaft and a pair of opposing first and second jaw members. Each jaw member including a pair of spaced apart, electrically conductive tissue sealing surfaces adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy such that the tissue sealing surfaces are capable of conducting electrosurgical energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a seal. One or both of the first and second jaw members includes an electrically conductive cutting element disposed thereon. A switch assembly operably disposed on the housing includes an activation member in operable communication with the source of electrosurgical energy for supplying electrosurgical energy to the first and second jaw members. Activation of the activation member provides electrosurgical energy to the tissue sealing surfaces for sealing tissue and electrosurgical energy to the cutting element for cutting the sealed tissue.

    • An electrosurgical system is provided for the treatment of tissue, the system comprising an electrosurgical generator (1) and an instrument (3) comprising an instrument shaft (10) having a longitudinal axis, and an electrode assembly (12) at one end of the shaft. The first and second tissue treatment electrodes (11, 14) each have an exposed surface for treating tissue, the exposed surface of the first tissue treatment electrode (11) being such as to treat tissue disposed on the longitudinal axis, and the exposed surface of the second tissue treatment electrode (14) being such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis. The instrument has a first set of connections (62A, 62C) by which the first tissue treatment electrode (11) can be placed in circuit with the first return electrode (24) such that, in use, a current path is established between the first tissue treatment electrode (11) and the first return electrode (24). The instrument has a second set of connections (62B, 62D) by which the second tissue treatment electrode (14) can be placed in circuit with the second return electrode (25) such that, in use, a current path is established between the second tissue treatment electrode (14) and the second return electrode (25).

    • In modern surgery a large number of electronic components and electrical devices are employed in order to ensure that operations are reliable and do not harm the patient. It is the objective of the present invention to provide a surgical apparatus that ensures that changing between and executing a plurality of modes for controlling the surgical apparatus can be done in a simple and reliable way. For this purpose the surgical apparatus, comprising an electrical instrument in particular for cutting and/or coagulating biological tissue, has an actuation unit disposed on a preferably oblong handle and a control unit providing at least three modes for controlling the electrical instrument, such that these modes can be selected and/or performed by means of the actuation unit. The actuation unit contains a switching rocker with an oblong operating element, which is mounted in a guide device so as to be rotatable about a rocker axis that can be shifted perpendicular to the surface of the handle, so that starting from an initial position a first or second function position can be reached by forwards or backwards rotation about the rocker axis, and a third function position can be reached by pressing the operating element inward, two sensors being disposed on the operating element, one on the left and the other on the right side of the rocker axis, in such a way that by means of the sensors the function position selected by means of the switching rocker can be determined by a control unit.
