    • The present invention relates to filtering an interlaced input digital signal containing fields of chrominance information preparatory to converting the format of the signal by means of a downsampling conversion from a 4:2:2 format to a 4:2:0 format.
      In the invention, the input signal is applied to a delay circuit to derive samples of the input signal representing spatially separated elements from each chrominance field where the spatial separation is of one line. The magnitudes of the samples are compared relative to one another to identify frequencies which fall within different high and low frequency ranges. An adaptive filter has a plurality of frequency responses corresponding to the frequency ranges and a frequency response is selected in accordance with the identified frequency range of the input signal samples.

    • The present invention relates to digital television, and in particular the encoding of high-definition television (HDTV).
      Standard digital television pictures have a resolution of 480 x 704 pixels and display at 30 frames per second. High definition television (HDTV) differs from standard television in having a much higher resolution.
      The generation of digitally compressed HDTV signals requires dedicated encoding equipment due to the high sampling rates used for HDTV signals. Consequently, due to their increased complexity, HDTV encoders are substantially more complex and expensive than standard TV encoders.
      A standard television encoder is not capable of encoding a HDTV image due to the increased resolution and the much larger data rates associated with such large images which is outside of capacity of a standard television encoder.
      The present invention overcomes these problems and provides a method and apparatus for creating HDTV signals using predominantly standard television equipment.

      A voltage controlled oscillator is employed to generate first and second oscillations in phase quadrature with respect to each other. The modulated input signal is mixed with the first of the oscillations to detect the (I) signal component and the modulated input signal is mixed with the second of the oscillations to detect the (Q) signal component. A control signal is derived from the (I) and (Q) signal components as an estimate of the phase difference between the input signal carrier and the voltage controlled oscillator. The control signal conforms to the relationship: where 'a' is the control signal, 'k' is an odd integer between 1 and M, and C k m represent binominal coefficients.
      The frequency of the voltage controlled oscillator is controlled by the control signal to recover the carrier phase.
