    • A knitting cam (12a) which engages with butts (6, 7) for controlling forward and backward movements of needles having different projecting amounts in order to form a small stitch and a large stitch in the same course is provided with a common lowering cam face (21) for lowering the butts of both a needle for the formation of a small stitch and a needle for the formation of a large stitch, a stitch size determining cam face (23) for a small stitch contiguous to the common lowering cam face (21), and a stitch size determining cam face (25) for a large stitch located rearwardly of the stitch size determining cam face (23) for a small stitch and having a lesser thickness than the common lowering cam face (21) for acting upon a butt which projects by a greater amount. The cam (12a) is further provided with lowering movement restricting means (24a, 24b) for restricting the maximum lowered position at least of the needle for the formation of a small stitch. By this means the jumping of needles at high speeds of movement of the needles and carriage is prevented.

    • A method of knitting an upholstery fabric having at least two adjoined contiguous regions of different knitted structures located side-by-side in a wale-wise direction and having courses extending continuously through both regions in which the knitting is carried out on a machine having a pair of opposed independently operable needle beds and in which the needles in each bed can be moved independently of one another in that bed into the path of an operating cam box reciprocal along the needle beds and containing independently operable cam members for each direction of movement of the cam box and in which the camming surfaces of the cam members can be independently altered to affect the loop length of stitches knitted on the needles operated by the cam and in which the needles for one region are actuated by a cam surface in the cam box so as to give stitches with a first loop length and the needles for the adjacent region are operated by a cam surface in the cam box so as to give a second loop length different to the first loop length. The loop lengths of the two adjacent structures are relatively adjusted so that, in the relaxed condition of the fabric, the same number of courses of each of the two regions of different knitted structures in the wale-wise direction extend for substantially the same wale-wise distance.

    • A cam control mechanism of a carriage in a flat knitting machine capable of controlling vats with different heights from the carriage depending on the requirement, without having to mount plural solenoids on the carriage for controlling vats with different heights on the jacks for composing the knitting needles in a flat knitting machine.
      The cam control mechanism includes a bottom plate (1) of a carriage, an opening (2) in said bottom plate of said carriage, and a cam (3) composed of an actuating part (4) and a shaft part (5) disposed with the actuating part (4) of the cam (3) projecting out from this opening (2) below said bottom plate (1). A support bracket (11) is disposed for supporting the shaft part (5) freely movable in a vertical direction in the carriage. One end of a spring (17) freely fitted to the shaft part (5) abuts against the support bracket (11). The other end of the spring (11) abuts against a flange (18) disposed on the shaft part (5). The cam (3) is thrust upward by an elastic force of the spring (11). A step motor (19) is mounted on the front end of the shaft part by means of the support bracket so that the front end (21) of the main shaft (20) of the step motor (19) may abut against the front end (22) of the shaft part (5). The cam (3) is controlled in the vertical direction by a vertical motion of the main shaft due to actuation of the step motor (19).
