摘要： Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to communications between devices. As consistent with one or more embodiments, a local device has a first clock, a low-frequency (LF) transmitter and a high-frequency (HF) transceiver. A remote device includes a second clock, a LF receiver and a HF transceiver. An LF signal is transmitted from the local device to the remote device and used to synchronize the second clock. The first clock is synchronized based on an HF signal transmitted to the local device using the synchronized second clock and a first predetermined time delay relative to receipt of the LF signal. The second clock is resynchronized based on a second HF signal transmitted to the remote device using the first clock and a second predetermined time delay relative to receipt of the first HF signal, while accounting for a trip time for communicating one or both of the HF signals.

In an embodiment, a beacon may transmit a beacon signal according to a modified frequency hopping pattern and a wireless tracking device may receive the beacon signal by tuning a receiver according to the frequency hopping pattern. In an embodiment, the modified frequency hopping pattern may include a reference frequency generated at a high redundancy pattern multiplexed with a pseudo random sequence of frequencies. In an embodiment, the packets of the beacon signal transmitted at the reference frequency may include an indication of the next frequency according to the modified frequency hopping pattern.

At least a group of the sensors receive respective signals emitted from each of a plurality of sources (24, 26), and record respective times of arrival of the signals at the sensors according to the respective clocks. Location information is provided, including respective sensor locations of the sensors. The respective clocks are synchronized based on the recorded times of arrival and on the location information. In the process the sources may be localized, or if the sources are far away, then their directions may be resolved. Sensor positions may also be resolved in the process.
