    • A voltage source converter (10) comprises: a DC terminal (12) for connection to a DC electrical network (24); a converter limb (16) operatively connected to the DC terminal (12), the converter limb (16) including at least one limb portion (18,20) operatively connected to an AC terminal (22), the AC terminal (22) being connectable to an AC electrical network (26), the or each limb portion (18,20) including a valve, the or each valve including at least one module (28), the or each module (28) including at least one switching element and at least one energy storage device, the or each switching element and the or each energy storage device in the or each module (28) combining to selectively provide a voltage source; a controller (38) including a valve voltage demand sub-controller (44), the controller (38) being configured to provide a zero alternating current demand and a direct current demand to the valve voltage demand sub-controller (44), the controller (38) being further configured to provide AC and DC output voltage demands to the valve voltage demand sub-controller (44), the valve voltage demand sub-controller (44) being configured to process the alternating and direct current demands and the AC and DC output voltage demands so as to generate a or a respective valve voltage demand for the or each valve; and a switching control unit (50) configured to control switching of the or each switching element in the or each module (28) so as to generate a voltage across the or each valve in accordance with the or the respective valve voltage demand and thereby cause transfer of power between the AC and DC electrical networks (26,24).

    • In the field of gate drivers for switching devices with a gate terminal via which the switching device can be turned on and off, a switching stage (10; 90) comprises first and second input terminals (12, 14) that are connectable in use with corresponding positive and negative terminals (16, 18) of a regulated voltage source (20). The switching stage (10; 80; 90) also includes an output terminal (34) which is connectable in use with a gate terminal (36) of a switching device (28). In addition the switching stage (10; 80; 90) includes a secondary energy storage device (38) that is electrically connected with the first and second input terminals (12, 14) to in use receive and store energy via the regulated voltage source (20). The switching stage (10; 90) in use selectively provides a first switching path (50) between the regulated voltage source (20) and the output terminal (34) to apply a voltage at a first polarity to the gate terminal (36), and a second switching path (52) between the secondary energy storage device (38) and the output terminal (34) to apply a voltage at a second polarity opposite the first polarity to the gate terminal (36).
