    • A tape cartridge turably holding within a housing a reel with tape wound thereon, the reel including a hub having a disk with teeth formed around its periphery for engagement with a recorder drive shaft, the hub underside having throughholes for engagement with a breake release plate, the hub having teeth to engage a brake lock, the brake release plate having legs adapted to fit in said throughholes, the brake lock having brake teeth in mesh with the teeth of the hub, and further including a spring member between the brake lock and an upper housing casing to urge the brake lock in braking position. A short toe on the outer end of the brake release plate legs prevents the legs from coming off, out of engagement with, a corresponding hub hole. A reinforcing structure is provided between the center of a main plate and the legs of the brake release plate.

    • Disclosed is a data storage system for use with a tape cartridge storing data in a serpentine pattern on tape media, and having a memory device for storing a device block map for the tape media. A tape drive, or a loading mechanism, first positions the tape cartridge at memory interface for transferring the device block map from the memory device to a processor, and subsequently positions the tape media for reading and/or writing. The processor processes the device block map from the memory device for optimal retrieval of the serpentine pattern data of the tape media. The processing of the device block map occurs while the tape media is positioned for reading and/or writing, so that the processor begins the retrieval reading process immediately upon the positioning of the tape media. In another aspect of the invention, a robotic accessor of an automated data storage library moves the tape cartridge to the tape drive. The tape cartridge is positioned at the memory interface on the robotic accessor, and the stored device block map is transferred from the memory device to the processor, during the move.

    • A cartridge accommodates a recording medium etc, and includes an opening and a shutter for opening and closing the opening. The shutter surface is formed with a hole with which an external drive member engages for driving the shutter. An inner side peripheral surface of the hole, upon which at least the drive member impinges when opening and closing the opening, is constructed of a bending portion continuous from the shutter surface. The bending portion can be worked as a continuous surface by punching out a prepared hole so as to leave a portion corresponding to the bending portion and thereafter bending it. A resinous protection layer having a thickness more than 12 µm is provided on the shutter surface upon which the drive member impinges when engaging with the hole.
