摘要： Laser apparatus configured to minimize wavefront distortion of a coherent light beam is disclosed. The lasing medium (102) of the laser apparatus has a hexagonal cross section and an internal surface (112) with a circular cross section (116) coaxial with a longitudinal axis of the lasing medium. The internal surface defines an interior space (116) for receiving an optical pumping source (114). The external faces (110) of the lasing medium are surrounded with a circumferential reflector (122) and fluid coolant is flowed over the internal surface and external faces. The coherent light beam is passed through the lasing medium to follow a helical course totally internally reflecting off of the external faces.

摘要： Provided is a method for manufacturing a translucent polycrystalline material with optical properties continuously varying in the material. A slurry including a group of single crystal grains that are acted upon by a force when placed in a magnetic field is immobilized in a gradient magnetic field with a spatially varying magnetic flux density and then sintered. For example, where a slurry including a group of single crystal grains of YAG doped with Er and a group of single crystal grains of YAG undoped with a rare earth material is immobilized in a magnetic field with a non-uniform distribution of magnetic field intensity, the region with a strong magnetic field becomes a laser oscillation region that is rich in Er-doped YAG and has aligned crystal orientations, whereas the region with a weak magnetic field becomes a translucent region rich in YAG undoped with a rare earth material. A polycrystalline material can be manufactured in which a core with laser oscillations and a guide surrounding the core and guiding excitation light to the core are obtained at the same time.

摘要： A material having a surface and a dopant in the material distributed whereby the material has a spatially variant optical flux density profile. In accordance with the invention, tailored non-uniform gain profiles within a Yb:YAG laser component (rod, slab, disc, etc.) are achieved by a spatial material modification in the spatially masked pre-forms. High temperature-assisted reduction leads to the coordinate-dependent gain profiles, which are controlled by the topology of the deposited solid masks. The gain profiles are obtained by reducing the charge state of the laser-active trivalent Yb3+ ions into inactive divalent Yb2+ ions. This valence conversion process is driven by mass transport of ions and oxygen vacancies. These processes, in turn, affect the dopant distribution throughout the surface and bulk laser crystal.

摘要： An optical amplifier (10) which integrates a pre-amplifier (46) and a power amplifier (48) in a single rectangular active medium (14) to enable amplification of low power ultra-short pulses to optimal power levels. A seed beam passes through the amplification medium along a first pre-amplification path (32) making multiple traverses of the medium. It is imaged back along the first path to make a double pass of the medium as a pre-amplifier. The beam is then re-imaged into the medium again on a second power amplification path, making multiple traverses of the medium in a single pass. The paths are different but overlap so that efficient power extraction is achieved. Embodiments based on all passive components are described.
