    • This invention relates to optically active high-molecular-weight compounds represented by the structural formula and stationary-phase materials containing the same. The high-molecular-weight compounds exhibit optical activity by virtue of their stacking helical structure wherein the aromatic groups are aligned in a twisted arrangement, thus being useful as optically active stationary phases for HPLC or polarized- light absorbers.

      In the formula 1 Ar in the formula is an aromatic ring, R 1 , and R 2 are hydrogen atoms or organic groups, R 3 and R 4 are substituents, n is an integer of 2 or more, X is a group selected from among -(CH 2 ) m -, an aromatic group, a vinyl group, a hetero atom and a group containing a hetero atom, and m is an integer of 0 or more. R 3 and R 4 may be introduced 2-4 times respectively, wherein these may be identical or different, and R is a hydrogen atom, a hetero atom or an organic group.
