    • In a screened inductance sensor system having a drive winding (18) energisable to set up an alternating magnetic drive field, a sense winding (20) links the drive field and a screening element (13) modulates the spatial distribution of the drive field, when in the vicinity of the sense winding (20). Variations in voltage induced in the sense winding (20) provide an indication of the relative position of the screening element (13) and the sense winding (20). The drive winding (18) and the sense winding (20) are accommodated in a displaceable portion (15) of the sensor, and the screening element (13) is fixedly located relative to the movable sensor portion (15). Modulation of the spatial distribution of the drive field occurs when the displaceable sensor portion (15) is moved into the vicinity of the screening element (13). In application of the system to control of vehicles (12) following a predetermined path, fixed screening elements (13) may be located at spaced apart intervals along the path, where the vehicles (12) are on tracks, to provide locational signals according as the vehicles (12) pass these fixed screens. The system may also be applied to providing guidance and position information for a steerable vehicle, in which case two sense windings are used, one responsive to sidewise deviation from the intended path of travel, and the other sense winding providing a cycled output signal, which is counted to yield a measure of distance travelled.

    • In a method of producing a printed circuit winding for a screened inductance sensor, a winding shape for a two-pole planar linear geometry is first of all computed. The shape of this winding is selected to provide an output in accordance with a specified transfer function for the sensor. The computed planar linear winding shape is then transformed to, typically, polar coordinates to provide a winding shape suitable for a rotary planar geometry. The method is carried out using a computer and the transformed winding shape is output to provide the printed circuit artwork. The method is especially suited to producing printed circuit windings for screened inductance level gauges, especially level gauges for fuel tanks where a physical barrier is interposed between the movable screen and the windings of the transducer. The method may also be applied to the design of concentric turn windings providing a similar output to that from an equivalent distributed winding in which the turns are displaced in the direction of relative screen and sense winding movement.

    • An error detection system is provided for a two-state fiber optic sensor (10) . An amplified photodetector signal is sampled by each of an ON-OFF threshold de­tector (24) , a disconnect threshold detector (26) and a slope detector (28). The ON-OFF threshold detector (24) monitors whether the detector signal is above or below an ON-OFF threshold value corresponding to the parameter being sensed and activates an appropriate sensor output. The disconnect threshold detector (26) monitors the constant low level detector signal corres­ponding to low level light received by the detector even when the threshold detector (24) is in the OFF state, and triggers an error signal should the detector signal fall below a disconnect threshold value. The slope detector (28) monitors the rate of change of the detector signal. Where the detector signal changes ra­pidly, such as during normal sensor switching, the slope detector (28) permits the detector signal to pass to a latch (30), which retains in memory the last detector signal which changed rapidly enough to trigger the slope detector (28) and produces an output corresponding to the ON-OFF status of the last detector signal in memory. A slowly changing detector signal will not trigger the slope detector (28). Where the ouputs of the ON-OFF threshold detector (24) and the latch (30) differ, a comparator (34) triggers an error signal.

    • In a screened inductance sensor for a brushless d.c. motor, a sensor rotor (14) carrying conductive screens (21) is mounted on an extension (12) of the motor shaft. A single solenoidal drive winding (22) on a stator (26, 27) of the sensor establishes a drive field, when energised, which induces a voltage in a sense winding (23), also carried on the stator (26, 27). This sense winding (23) is laid around the periphery of a notional cylinder coaxial with the rotor (14) and stator (26, 27) and has series-connected loops of generally rectangular configuration when viewed in development. The screens (21) pass between the drive winding (22) and the sense winding (23) in operation of the sensor to modulate the sense winding output by shading the drive field. The single drive winding (22) is located radially inwardly of one axial end (32a) of the sense winding (23), so that this axial end (32a) is aligned with an axially central region of the drive winding midway between its axial ends.

    • An optical sensing system and method for sensing across the working air gap of an electric motor is described. The sensing system (10) includes a light source (12) to provide optical energy, source fiber optic means (14) to transmit the op­tical energy to an optical head (16) mounted at the air gap (18), a code pattern (26) mounted on the motor rotor to modulate the optical energy, return fiber optic means (22) to transmit the modulated optical energy to one or more detectors (24), and information processing and motor control electronics (25) to analyze data from detectors (24) and control the motor based thereon. Multi-channel information sensing with multiplexing is also disclosed.
