    • A utility knife comprises two elongate handle portions (3, 4) and a blade carrier (5) assembly carrying a blade (6) arranged to protrude from a front end of the handle. The upper handle portion (3) has an aperture (26) through a rear end part thereof. When the knife is assembled, the two handle portions (3, 4) are slid relatively longitudinally of one another, the upper handle portion moving forwardly of the lower handle portion, until a latch part (31) near the rear end of the lower handle portion (4) clicks into latching engagement with the front edge (36) of the aperture (26) in the upper handle portion (3). The upper handle portion (3) is formed near its front end with interlocking elements, each having an integral, forwardly projecting piece (16, 17) at the bottom thereof. The front of the lower handle portion (4) is formed with interlocking elements, each having an integral, rearwardly projecting piece (22, 23) at the top thereof, to overlie and hence interlock with a forwardly projecting piece at the bottom of the corresponding interlocking element of the upper handle portion. The upper portion (3) further includes a forwardly-projecting flat tab (50) which is received within a longitudinally-extending slot (52) formed in the forward end of the lower handle portion (4).

    • A retractable rule assembly (10) includes a housing assembly (12) and a reel (14) rotatably mounted in the housing assembly. An elongated blade (16) formed of a ribbon of metal having one end connected to the reel is constructed and arranged with respect to the housing assembly to extend from a position tangential to the reel outwardly through a spaced opening (22) in the housing assembly. A coil spring (32) formed of a ribbon of metal has a construction and arrangement between the housing assembly and the reel to rotate the reel in the housing assembly in a direction to wind up the elongated blade when extending outwardly of the housing assembly opening in a normal concavo-convex cross-sectional configuration onto the reel in an abutting volute coil formation in a flattened cross-sectional configuration. A blade holding assembly is constructed and arranged to be manually actuated to hold the blade in any position of extension outwardly of the housing assembly opening and to release the blade from any position in which it is held. The blade has a blade width, thickness and height of concavo-convex curvature sufficient to enable the blade to stand out arcuately a length measured along the blade of at least 10.5 feet (approximately 3.2 m) with a horizontal linear length of standout thereof being greater than 97% of the arcuate length of standout.

    • A ratcheting driver has a shaft rotatable (1) relative to a handle (2), and a ratchet mechanism (5) between the handle and the shaft. The ratchet mechanism (51) has a body (52) fixed to the handle (2). A spur gear (57) coaxial with the shaft (1) is mounted in the body (52) so as to be rotatable about a common rotation axis (11) of the shaft and the spur gear. First and second pawls (58a,58b) are mounted on the body (52) so as to be tiltable about axes parallel to the rotation axis and on opposite sides of an imaginary plane containing the rotation axis. Each pawl has a free end between its tilting axis and the said plane, and is tiltable between an engaging position, in which its free end intersects the tip cylinder of the spur gear (57) and can abut against the flank of a gear tooth to prevent rotation of the gear (57) in one direction relative to the body (52), and a non-engaging position, in which its free end lies outside the tip cylinder. A control member (66) having first and second spring legs (76a,76b) is movable to a first ratcheting position, in which the first leg (76a) urges the first pawl (58) to the engaging position and the second leg (76b) urges the second pawl (58b) to the non-engaging position, a second ratcheting position, in which the first leg (76a) urges the first pawl (58a) to the non-engaging position and the second leg (76b) urges the second pawl (58b) to the engaging position, and an intermediate non-ratcheting position, in which both legs (76a,76b) urge both pawls (58a,58b) to the engaging position. A control sleeve (64) rotatably mounted on the body (52), being captive between the handle (2) and the body (52), is linked to the control member (66) so that rotation of the control sleeve (64) clockwise and anticlockwise from a given position moves the control member (66) from the intermediate non-ratcheting position to the first and second ratcheting positions respectively.

    • The invention of this patent application relates to the packaging of decorating articles. Typically said articles are packaged in plastics packaging which is required to be fitted to the articles by hand or, when performed automatically, the finished package is undesirably bulky. The method of packaging of the invention allows a plurality of articles to be packaged at one time and is an automatic process. The finished package is designed such that only the head portion of the articles are packaged with the handle portion projecting from the packaging. Furthermore the dimension of the packaging is close to the dimension of the article which is trapped therein. Additionally there may also be incorporated into the package a backing layer or printed advertising material to enhance the appearance of the article to the consumer.
