    • A method for tool measurement using a non-contact tool setting apparatus mounted to a machine tool. The non-contact tool setting apparatus comprises a transmitter (10) for emitting a light beam (12;80) having a beam width and a receiver (14) for receiving the light beam (12). The receiver (14) generates a beam intensity signal describing the intensity of received light. The method is for measuring a tool (84) comprising a tool feature having a nominal tool diameter less than the beam width such that fully inserting the tool (84) feature into the light beam (80) would only partially occlude the light beam (80). The method comprises moving the tool feature through the light beam (12;80) thereby causing a change in the beam intensity signal and generating a trigger signal when the beam intensity signal crosses a trigger threshold. A size of the tool feature (84) is generated using the trigger signal generated. The method also comprises a step of applying a tool size correction (e.g. a change to the trigger threshold, trigger delay etc) that accounts for the nominal tool diameter of the tool feature (84) being less than the beam width by adjusting the trigger threshold so that the amount of obscuration required for a trigger signal is reduced for smaller tool diameters.
