    • The present invention has for its object to provide an economical cement additive capable of reducing the amount of water to be added to cement compositions and still capable of providing cement compositions with high fluidity, good processability, and a proper level of air-entraining ability resulting from sufficient foaming prevention, at low addition levels, a cement composition in which the above cement additive is used, and a polycarboxylic acid polymer excellent in dispersing effects on cement particles or inorganic powders or pigments and capable of being used with advantage as a cement additive or a dispersant for various uses.
      The invention provides, among others, a cement additive comprising, as main component, a polycarboxylic acid polymer (X) which has ; repeating units (A), (B), (C) and (D), wherein none of the proportion of occurrence S1 of repeating unit (A), the proportion of occurrence T1 of repeating unit (B) and the proportion of occurrence E1 of repeating unit (C) is not equal to zero, the average number n of moles of an oxyalkylene group as added in repeating unit (B) is not less than 110, and that the weight average molecular weight of said polycarboxylic acid polymer is not less than 10000.

    • The present invention refers to a process for the preparation of a copolymer containing structural units derived from alpha, beta unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids and their salts, half-esters of dicarboxylic acids or salts thereof, an olefin and a hydrophobic moiety, said hydrophobic moiety being incorporated into the copolymer chain; said process comprises reacting

      a) at least one monomer selected from alpha, beta unsaturated mono-carboxylic acids and their salts; and alpha, beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, their halfesters and salts thereof;
      b) at least one monomer selected from olefins; and
      c) at least one hydrophobic compound free of olefinic unsaturation containing units of the formula:
      wherein R 1 is independently at each occurrence selected from hydrogen and C 1 -C 4 alkyl with the proviso that at least one R 1 is selected from C 1 -C 4 alkyl in an amount of 0.01 to 30 wt% based on the total amount of a), b) and c);
      at a temperature in the range of 25°C-100°C, and in the presence of a free-radical initiator in an amount of 1.5wt%-25wt% based on the total weight of a), b) and c), to copolymers obtainable therefrom and the use of these polymers as cement additives.

    • A maleic copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 1,000 to 100,000, a calcium ion scavenging capacity of at least 300 mgCaC0 3 /g, and a clay dispersing capacity of at least 1.2; and another maleic copolymer having a clay adsorption rate of 20-90 % and a stability constant with respect to calcium ions of at least 4.0. The process for producing these copolymers comprises the step of feeding maleic acid and/or its salt (A) in a concentration of at least 35 wt. % into a reactor, the step of feeding thereafter hydrogen peroxide in an amount of 3-20 wt. % based on the component (A) into the reactor, and the step of feeding thereafter a water-soluble ethylenic monomer (B) in a molar ratio of the component (A) to the component (B) of 95/5 to 5/95 into the reactor within a period of 30 to 500 minutes after the starting of the reaction, said monomer feed step being completed 10 to 300 minutes after the completion of said peroxide feed step. The obtained copolymers are used as a detergent composition, inorganic pigment dispersant, water treatment and fiber treatment.
