    • The invention concerns a cable brake (2) for a balancer. The balancer (1) in this case is used as lifting device to lower or to descend small and especially clumsy loads (20). The type of balancer used has the possibility to block the cable manually. The cable brake consists of a double spool (6) on which the cable (12) from the balancer on is wound on one side and on the other side the cable (17) for the object to be lowered. Both cables are fixed to the spool. The spool is connected through a freewheel (11) with the incoming shaft (9) of a accelerating wormgear. On the outgoing shaft (8) of the wormgear a friction brake is mounted with friction shoes (14) which are actuated by centrifugal force. The friction shoes are suitably prestressed with a compression spring (16) against the brake lining. The freewheel is installed in such a way that the brake will come into action when the cable is pulled into the balancer, while on descending the load the freewheel leaves the spool free. In some cases it is possible to install a permanent installation and instead of a balancer use a counterweigth in combination with the cable brake.
