    • An electrical connector assembly (20) for a card reader including a housing (24) having opposed major and minor sides (26, 30) defining a card receiving mouth (32), a plurality of conductive electrical terminals (36) disposed in the housing (24) and having portions (38) thereof extending into the mouth (32), and a conductive shroud (50) encircling the housing (24), the shroud (24) having inwardly spaced contact portions extending into the mouth (32) along at least one of the major sides (26) of the housing (24), the shroud contact portions being spaced from the electrical terminal portions (38) when the shroud (50) is assembled to the housing (24). The inwardly spaced contact portions can be spring fingers (54) extending into the mouth (32) from an edge (53) of the shroud (50) or dimples (254) expressed into the mouth from an outer surface of the shroud (250). At least one of the major sides (26) of the housing (24) includes a plurality of shroud contact receiving recesses (28) adapted to receive the shroud contact portions such that the shroud contact portions are closely adjacent a card receiving space (34) thereby being positioned to be either electrically engaged by corresponding raised conductive surfaces (84) on an outwardly facing conductive surface (82) of a shielded card (70) upon insertion of the shielded card into the mouth (32), or to remain spaced from surfaces of an unshielded card (170) upon inserting the unshielded card into the mouth (32).

    • A connector which can connect a personal computer designed to use a memory card as an external memory medium to an external storage device or medium via the connection for the memory card. The housing (4) of a card type connector (2) is designed to have an external shape and size substantially the same as a standardized memory card. By inserting the housing (4) into a memory card connector (22) of a personal computer (200), the personal computer (200) and a hard disk drive (210) are connected by a cable (36) extending from the housing (4) of the card type connector (2), so that data transmission and reception can be performed between the personal computer (200) and the hard disk drive (210).

    • A guide mechanism (14) prevents an improperly oriented PC card (10) from being inserted a significant distance into a PC slot. A pair of PC card guide mechanisms (14,16) are coupled to a PC male connector (12). A PC card (10) is received at the guides (14,16) as the card is inserted and pushed toward the male connector. Each guide mechanism includes a proximal end (88,188) that engages an edge (18,20) of the male connector (12), and a distal flanged end (74,174) that receives the PC card (10). A guide rail (76,176) extends between the proximal (88,188) and distal (74,174) ends of each guide mechanism (14,16). Typically, a PC card (10) is inserted female edge (22) first into a PC slot. The card first encounters the flanged ends (74,174) of the guides (14,16) which direct the card (10) onto the guide rails (76,176). At least one guide mechanism (14) includes a flexible arm (80) along its guide rail (76). At the tip of the arm (80) is a keying mechanism (82) responsive to the PC card orientation. When the PC card is properly oriented, the card (10) slides over the keying mechanism (82) pushing it aside to traverse the guide rail (76). When the PC card is improperly oriented, the card is blocked by the keying mechanism (82 at 96) so as not to traverse the guide rail (76). The inventive keying mechanism is located away from the male connector (12) and toward the distal end (74) of the guide mechanism (14). As a result, an installer feels resistance of an improperly oriented card before the card travels a significant distance within the slot. In particular, the installer receives tactile feedback by feeling the resistance and visible feedback by seeing that the card is not installed nearly as far as it should when a proper connection occurs. With a significant length of the PC card protruding from the slot, the card is easily grasped and removed. Automatic ejection is not needed.
