The apparatus includes an image generator, a section identifier and a section manipulator. The image generator generates an image of a pre-determined rendition of the set of contents; the section identifier identifies a section in the contents based on a preference of the provider of the set of contents; and the section manipulator re-formats the identified section to generate a new rendition, depending on a characteristic of the specific class of devices and a preference of the provider. After the re-formatting, the new rendition is displayed on the specific class of devices.

摘要： Automated methods are provided for the editing and authoring of topic scripts for the dynamic operation of virtual robots. A virtual robot, or BOT, processes natural language input from a user to effect certain actions according to use input. Typically, BOTs are constructed using topic scripts. Topic scripts may comprise example statements that typify the topic in question and patterns that are matched against user input to determine if the topic is activated by the user input. The steps of one embodiment of the present invention comprise: for an example statement associated with a topic script; testing said example statement against patterns in the topic script to determine if said example statement activates said topic; then for a word in an example statement not activating said topic: identifying zero or more pattern lists matching said word; then choosing one action from among a group of actions comprising: keeping said word; and replacing said word with a pattern list; then adding zero or more revised patterns to said topic script.

摘要： An apparatus and a method for identifying one of a plurality of documents stored in a computer-readable medium are disclosed. The method includes the steps of prompting a computer-user to construct a search expression (120), then communicating the search expression to each of a plurality of search engines located at respective World Wide Web sites. Each of the plurality of search engines is prompted to concurrently identify a respective plurality of web pages containing text consistent with the search expression and to return a respective URL for each such web page identified (130). Redundant URLs returned by the search engines are filtered to obtain an initial set of web pages. Each of the initial set of web pages is downloaded and linguistically analyzed (140) to automatically identify for the computer-user keyword phrases therein. The computer-user is prompted to construct a query expression in which one or more keyword phrases from the initial set of web pages is an operand. The query expression is then used to identify at least one web page of the initial set of web pages and the identified web page is presented to the user in the form of an abstract (150).

摘要： Method and apparatus to deliver an application to a client through a transmission medium. The application can be an interactive application, and the apparatus includes an appliance-specific transducer and an adaptive-transmission transducer. The appliance-specific transducer, in view of the client's request for the interactive application in the server, is configured to modify the application based on at least one characteristic of the client and at least one characteristic of the application to generate an appliance-specific output. Based on at least one characteristic of the application and at least one characteristic of the medium of transmission, the adaptive-transmission transducer is configured to modify the appliance-specific output to generate an adapted output. The output is delivered through the medium to the client, which includes a decoder and a user-interface. The decoder decodes the adapted output to produce a modified version of the interactive application to be used by a party through the user-interface. In another embodiment, the application can be a push application.

摘要： A text enhancement method and apparatus for the presentation of text for improved human reading. The method includes extracting text specific attributes from machine readable text and varying the text presentation in accordance with the attributes. The preferred embodiment of the method: extracts parts of speech and punctuation from a sentence, applies folding rules which use the parts of speech to determine folding points, and presents text segments each on a new line and having a determined horizontal displacement based on the text specific attributes. One method displays text over bent curves having a shape based on text content. Another method includes displaying relative text position within a hierarchy using alternating vertically and horizontally tiled planes. Another method supports reading text segments across opposed pages without waiting for paging. Yet another method displays text to allow reading from bottom to top as though from front to back.
