    • A method for forming a molded elastomeric article (36) having a small diameter hole comprises the steps of select­ ing a relatively fine filament (32) made of an effectively nonattenuable material having a relatively high tensile strength, placing the filament under tension in a mold (12, 16), injecting elastomeric material into the mold about the filament (32) so that the filament is embedded in the materi­ al, curing the material to form a molded article (36), and drawing the filament from the molded article completely such that a hole is formed therethrough. The elastomeric material may subsequently be separated into wafers, each having a hole formed therethrough of a predetermined and accurate size.

    • A fuel filler pipe seal (50) includes upper (54) and lower (58) portions and a sealing lip (52) positioned at the juncture of the upper and lower portions to engage an outer surface of a fuel nozzle and prevent the escape into the atmosphere of fuel fumes during a fueling operation. The lip (52) lies in a plane (64) which intersects a groove (68) formed in an outer surface of the seal to receive a seat (30) formed on a mounting bracket (22) mounted in an upper end of the filler pipe (l2), and the upper portion (54) of the seal has an umbrella valve (70) formed integrally with it which covers a vent opening (28) in the bracket and is preloaded to release at a predetermined pressure. By positioning the sealing lip adjacent the seat-receiving groove a better seal with a fuel nozzle is formed, premature release of the umbrella valve is avoided, and damage to the seal when the nozzle is thrust into the filler pipe is minimized.

    • A valve assembly is disclosed for permitting relatively free flow in a first direction and for preventing flow in the path in a second, opposite direction. The assembly includes a resi- lientflow regulator (54) including a pair of lips (56) arrangedto define a normally closed slit (62) at the outer ends of the lips. An annular flange (66) extends outwardly about the opposite end of the regulator. A housing outlet portion (50) defines a housing interior having an outlet port and an open sealing end, with an annular collar (76) disposed outwardly about the sealing end. The regulator is disposed within the housing outlet portion with the flange contained within the collar. A cover plate (84) is attached to the collar for securing the regulator and for sealing the housing. The housing outlet portion defines a first sealing ring (78) and the cover plate defines a second sealing (96) such that the first and second sealing rings are disposed on opposite sides of the flange. At least one of the sealing rings includes a bevel, defined so that the flange (66) is compressed between the sealing rings (78, 96) to a greater degree along the portion oftheflange adjacent the lip bases than the portion of the flange adjacentthe collar. The beveled surfaces thereby center and align the regulator within the housing and prevent distortion in the flange region of the regulator from being transmitted to the outer ends of the lips.

    • A valve assembly for permitting flow in a first direction and for preventing flow in a second, opposite direction includes a resilient flow regulator (54) having a pair of lips arranged in a converging relationship to define a normally closed slit (62) at the outer ends of the lips. A housing outlet portion (50) defines a housing interior approximating the shape of the regulator. The housing outlet portion further includes an annular collar (76) disposed outwardly adjacent the base of each planar surface (70). The regulator is disposed within the housing outlet portion with an annular flange (66) thereof contained within the collar (76) and with the lips being adjacent to, but not in contact with, the interior housing surface. A cover plate (84) is attached to the collar for securing the regulator (54) and for sealing the housing. Bevelled surfaces (78) along the housing interior engage the regulator flange (66) for centering the regulator within the housing. Alignment tabs (68) are provided on each regulator lip for cooperating with recesses (80) in the planar surfaces (70) of the housing outlet portion. Alignment notches (82) are provided within the collar, one of which cooperates with an alignment key (92) formed on the inlet portion cover plate (84).
