    • An optical switching device comprises: a light guide including a total reflection plane capable of totally reflecting light thereby transmitting the light; a switching part capable of, at a position where its extraction plane is in close contact with the total reflection plane, capturing evanescent light and reflecting the captured light thereby outputting it; and a driving part for driving the optical switching part. The light guide, the switching part, and the driving part are laminated in this order into a multilayer structure. The employment of the multilayer structure makes it possible to optimize the respective layers independently of one another. The extracted light does not pass through the driving part. This allows the driving part to be optimized so as to achieve an optical switching device capable of operating at a high speed with low power consumption. Thus, it is possible to provide a low-loss and high-contrast optical switching device using an evanescent wave, which can respond at a high speed.

    • A switching TFT (thin-film transistor) 40 is disposed closely to an actuator 14 which comprises a lower electrode 28b, a shape holding layer 26, and an upper electrode 28a that are disposed on a vibrator. The upper electrode 28a of the actuator 14 is electrically connected through a contact 44 to a source/drain region 42 of the TFT 40. A gate line 46 and the gate electrode of the TFT 40 are electrically connected to each other through a contact 50. A data line 48 and a source/drain region 52 of the TFT 40 are electrically connected to each other through a contact 54. The TFT 40 may be replaced with a varistor or a piezoelectric relay. If a varistor is used, the off resistance of the varistor is preferably established such that a variation in a voltage applied to the actuator 14 due to a discharge owing to the off resistance in an unselected period is kept within 5 %, and the on resistance of the varistor is preferably established such that a voltage applied to the actuator 14 increases to 95 % in an effective selected period.
      The display apparatus with actuators 14 having shape holding layers has low electric energy consumption and higher raster luminance, and allows wires or interconnections to be formed with ease.

A plate member (32a) of a displacement-transmitting section (32) for determining the picture element area is provided on the actuator element (14). The entering amount (t) of the plate member (32a) into the evanescent region (120) is changed by controlling voltage application to the actuator element (14) so that display gradation of the picture element corresponding to the actuator element (14) is controlled. Accordingly, the time required to perform row scanning is drastically shortened, and it is possible to easily deal with high quality image display.
