摘要： A postage meter resetting apparatus includes a stepper motor (61) as a first motive arrangement for turning the resetting shaft (85) of a mechanical postage meter (20), another stepper motor (69) as a second motive mechanism to enable or disable resetting by the first stepper motor. A lead screw (98), lead nut and linkage, driven by the second stepper motor, when resetting is authorized, moves an axially movable part of a coupling between the second stepper motor and the meter's axially movable resetting shaft, to bring the resetting gear (87) on the shaft into engagement with a gear (93) of the meter's descending register. An input to the first stepper motor (61), representing a variable amount of postage, effects turning of the resetting shaft (85) and the engaged gears by amounts corresponding to the desired variable amount of postage to be added to the meter's descending register (39). An encoder (64) coupled to the shaft of the first stepper motor provides an output indication of the amount that the shaft has turned. A CPU routine assures that the gear on the meter's resetting shaft has cleared a blocking pin (89) and engaged the descending register gear prior to resetting by the first stepper motor. Another CPU routine clears jams when it is detected that the shaft has not been turned the amount desired.

Appropriate cryptographic processing and memory resources are contained in a Postal Security Device (PSD), which defines a cryptographic and physical boundary. Cryptographic processing occurs in the PSD, which provides security to these resources, thereby minimizing a successful fraudulent attack on the system. Speed of the cryptographic processing is also increased. The PSD may be in the form of an Applications Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) or Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Card.

摘要： In accordance with the invention, a postal security device (PSD) (10) contains a non-volatile memory (13) which does not depend on battery power such as an EEPROM (13), and contains a nonvolatile memory (14, 16) which does depend on battery power, such as a static RAM. The PSD (10) also contains an encryption engine (12, 14, 22). An encryption key is developed and is stored in the static RAM (14), which is sized to be only large enough to contain the encryption key. A large body of data, too large to fit in the static RAM, is encrypted by means of the encryption engine (12, 14, 22) and with reference to the encryption key, and is stored in the EEPROM (13). This body of data typically includes cryptographic keys and sensitive bit-images. When the PSD is powered, a large RAM (typically a dynamic RAM) (16) is available to receive the large body of data, decrypted using the encryption key. A tamper switch (17) cuts power to both RAMs (14, 16) in the event of tampering.

摘要： A separator apparatus for separating and moving sheets from a stack of sheets is described. The separator includes an input area, a first and second series of rollers (R2, R3) for feeding a sheet on the bottom of the stack, a third and fourth series of rollers and a first series of belts. A pre-separation brake is provided to act on the first series of belts to cause a first stage separation of the bottom sheet. A separation brake is provided to act on the fourth series of rollers to cause a second stage separation of the bottom sheet. The pre-separation and separation brakes permit the bottom sheets to be separated from the stack. A fifth series of rollers and a second series of belts are provided to feed the bottom sheets away.

摘要： A mechanism for freeing document jams in a machine that transports documents, the machine including a housing (15) having an interior portion and a pivotable cover (12) adapted to permit easy access to the interior portion of the machine housing, the cover pivoting from a closed and locked position to an open and locked position and being spring biased is described.
