摘要： This invention relates to an engraving system (10) and method for engraving a pattern using a plurality of engraving devices. The invention discloses apparatus and method for sequencing and engraving a plurality of engraving devices such that when the areas engraved by those heads meet they provide a continuous engraved pattern. The system and method also comprises an imaging system for imaging the engraved areas associated with each engraving head (34,36) so that the heads or signals driving the heads may be adjusted to provide engraved areas which appear as if they had been engraved by a single head when, for example, the engraved area of one head meets that of another head. Also disclosed is a method for sequencing and transmitting image data to be engraved to accommodate any cylindrical offset or the angular displacement between two engraving heads. Finally, a single, multi-purpose engraving system and method are shown for both exposing resist on a workpiece and also engraving either the same or a different workpiece.

摘要： An image recorder performs a first distortion correction at the resolution of an input image and a second distortion correction at the resolution of a recording head. The first distortion correction is performed by setting an angle difference between a write angle and a read angle to and from address space in a buffer memory (BM) to be equal to an inclination angle of scanning lines with respect to a main scanning direction. The second distortion correction is performed by shifting image data obtained by the first distortion correction in a sub-scanning direction by an amount responsive to the inclination angle. The smallest unit of the amount is one pixel unit (P). More specifically, image data is shifted by the width of one pixel (D) in blocks for memory access, and then for output of a gradient value for each pixel (D), it is further shifted by the width of one pixel unit (P) in sub-blocks which are obtained by dividing each block.

It image-processes obtained image data in a control part, and operates the positions of respective register marks (R1 to R4). It operates the quantity of displacement necessary for positioning an image. It obtains an offset count number Co for deciding an image recording starting position from the obtained quantity of displacement. It stores the obtained offset count number Co while obtaining starting position data. Then, dimensional correction data for the image is calculated. The image on the printing paper is first picked up, and the necessary quantity of displacement is calculated. A speed coefficient k is calculated for changing the rotational speed of a plate cylinder. Following this, a correction quantity by a Cd default count number previously set for deciding the image recording starting position is changed. Accordingly, the offset count number Co is calculated again on the basis of the obtained speed variable k. The obtained speed coefficient k and the offset count number Co are stored, and starting position data is obtained from both data.

The method and apparatus permit the engraver (10) to accommodate cylinders (14) of differing geometries, including a range of lengths, diameters and mounting configurations. The engraver (10) comprises a headstock (16) and a tailstock (18) which cooperate to rotatably support a cylinder (14) at an engraving station (15) in the engraver (10). The engraver (10) also comprises a cylinder handling system having at least one cylinder support (30) for supporting the cylinder (14) between the headstock (16) and tailstock (18) during loading and unloading of the cylinder (14). The cylinder handling system comprises a driver (32) for driving the cylinder support (30) towards and away from the engraving station until the headstock (16) and tailstock (18) engage and rotatably support the cylinder (14). Once the cylinder (14) is rotatably supported between the headstock (16) and tailstock (18), then the cylinder support (30) is retracted.
