    • In accordance with one form of the invention, a magnetic storage medium (e.g. disc pack 250) to be degaussed is placed in a coil (200) having a central open region sufficiently large to receive the entire magnetic storage medium. The coil is energized to obtain a current therein in one direction to produce a first magnetic field of a first polarity in the region. The coil is then energized to obtain a current therein in the opposite direction to produce in the region a second magnetic field of opposite polarity. The minimum strength of the magnetic fields should be at least 500 oersetds, and preferably about 1500 oersteds. In another form of the invention, a reel of magnetic tape (350) is simultaneously rotated on its axis and subjected to an applied transverse magnetic field, substantially in the plane of the reel, the transverse magnetic field being obtained using a lateral coil (140) which passes over and under the reel and covers about half the reel. The transverse magnetic field is applied first in one direction and then in the opposite direction. An axial magnetic field, substantially parallel to the axis of the reel, is then applied, first in one direction and then in the opposite direction, the axial magnetic field being obtained using a ring-shaped coil (150) surrounding the periphery of the reel. In the preferred embodiment, the step of applying an axial magnetic field includes applying axial magnetic fields in alternating directions at successively decreasing amplitudes.

    • A bulk degausser apparatus for erasing a reel (22) of high energy magnetic tape includes a means for generating magnetic fields including a coil (L1) defining a window (34) for passage of the reel (72) of tape. The coil (L1) includes a first winding (L2) having relatively few turns and a second winding (L3), inductively coupled to the first winding (L2), and having relatively many turns. The apparatus also includes an ac power supply (82) connected to the first winding (L2) and a dc power supply (84) connected to the second winding (L3). A resonance capacitor (C1) is interconnected with the second winding (L3) for substantially balancing the inductive reactance of the second winding (L3) at the frequency of the ac power supply. The apparatus also includes an isolation relay (K3) interconnecting the capacitor (C1) and the second winding (L3) with the dc power supply, for isolating the dc power supply when the first winding (L2) is energized by the ac power supply (82). Energization of the second winding (L3) by the dc power supply (84) causes a tape (22) in the window (34) to undergo a dc magnetic field, and energization of the first winding (L2) by the ac power supply induces ac current in the second winding (L3) resulting in a reel (22) in said window (34) experiencing an ac magnetic field. A drive mechanism for translating and rotating the reel (22) of high energy magnetic tape with respect to the coil (L1), is also disclosed.
