摘要： An optical switch comprises a cell member (2) in which a cell (3) is formed and a waveguide member (42) having a microslit (13). The cell (3) the side wall (6) of which is a piezoelectric/electrostrictive body or a ferroelectric body is filled with a gas (31). The microslit (13) is filled with a liquid (32). The cell (3) communicates with the microslit (13) though a communication hole (73). The microslit (13) crosses an optical waveguide. At the intersection, the cell (3) is disposed. By applying an electric field to the piezoelectric/electrostrictive body or the ferroelectric body of the side wall (6) of the cell (3), the side wall (6) is expanded/contracted, and thereby a part of the gas (31) in the cell (3) is ejected into the microslit (13) through the communication hole (73). The loss of this optical switch does not increase even if the response speed is increased. The optical switch can be produced at low cost, has an excellent durability, and operates with low power consumption.

摘要： An optical switch comprising at least an optical transmission unit (1), an optical path changing unit (8), and an actuator unit (11). The optical transmission unit (1) comprises a light reflecting surface (1a) which is disposed on a part of a surface facing at least to the optical path changing unit (8) and totally reflects light, and optical transmission paths (2, 4 and 5) which are disposed in at least three directions from the light reflecting surface (1a) and composed of a light waveguide. The optical path changing unit (8) is close to the light reflecting surface (1a) of the optical transmission unit (1) in a movable manner and comprises a light guiding member (9) formed of a translucent material, and a light reflecting member (10) which totally reflects light. The actuator unit (14) has a mechanism which is displaced by an external signal and transmits the displacement to the optical path changing unit (8), and brings the optical path changing unit (8) into/out of contact with the light reflecting surface (1a) of the optical transmission unit (1) by the displacement of the actuator unit (14) according to the external signal.

To switch the switching element (15) to a transmitting switching state, the moveable body is positioned in the recess in such a way that the gap between the boundary surface and the surface of the moveable body is filled completely with the liquid. If the moveable body is positioned in the recess in such a way that the boundary surface is free of the liquid, the incident light is reflected on said boundary surface. The switching element has low optical damping and is therefore economical to produce. Its compact construction means that larger switching arrangements with a large number of optical inputs and outputs can be created with the switching element.
