    • A highway crash cushion (10) includes a single, central, rigid, guide rail (12) that guides the crash cushion (10) in axial collapse. Diaphragm assemblies (14) are each provided with recessed legs, and a central guide that slides along the rail (12) while locking against the rail (12) in a lateral collision. The diaphragm assemblies (14) support fender panels (16) that include four longitudinally extending ridges, a central slot, and a tapered trailing edge that reduces vehicle snagging. Energy absorbing elements are disposed between the diaphragm assemblies (14), and each includes an indicator that clearly indicates when the element has been compressed and possibly damaged.

    • A transporter (10) for a length of highway barriers includes a series of barrier transporting units (12), each having at least one pair of wheels (30) positioned to straddle a length of highway barriers, at least one engaging device (36) configured to engage one of the barriers, and at least one lifting device (48) coupled to the engaging device to lift the engaging device and the engaged barriers. Articulating couplings (32) interconnect axially adjacent transporting units to form a train configured to straddle the length of highway barriers such as the train can be moved over a length of highway barriers to be transported. Two tractors (14,16) are connected to the train, one at each end of the train in line with the train to move the train. This transporter can be used by driving it over a length of highway barriers, using the engaging and lifting devices to lift the barriers, and then driving the transporter and the engaged barriers to a new location. The barriers are then lowered and released and the transporter is driven away, leaving the highway barriers at the new location.

    • A highway barrier (100) includes a collapsible guardrail assembly (140) and a rotatable beam (110) which is mounted between the rearward end of the guardrail assembly and a roadside hazard (102). The collapsible guardrail assembly includes a plurality of overlapping panels (142), adjacent ones of which are secured together by fasteners (150) riding in slots (144). The fasteners are designed to retain the panels together after the impact and the fasteners are positioned with respect to the panels to cause the panels to tend to rotate away from the roadside during the impact, thereby redirecting the vehicle away from the roadway. The beam (110) is rotatably mounted to the roadside hazard by a band (114) and the forward end of the beam as well as the forward end of each of the panels is supported above the ground on a respective slip base (156) designed to release in response to axial forces and to resist lateral forces. When an impacting vehicle engages the beam, the beam rotates away from the roadway around the roadside hazard (102), thereby redirecting the vehicle away from the hazard.

    • An impact attenuating body is disclosed for use on trucks or the like, the impact attenuating body (12) being arranged for engagement by vehicle (14) or the like, the impact attenuating body being further adapted for gradually arresting motion of the vehicle and dissipating its impact energy. The impact attenuating body is formed with a collapsible form including laterally extending members (36) with interconnecting brackets (38) forming rows (32) of compartments (34), the compartments being generally elongated along the direction of travel of the vehicle, selected compartments being void (V) and different sensities (H, L) of shock absorbing material such as expanded plastic foam being arranged in the other compartments for arresting movement of the vehicle and dissipating its impact energy as the vehcile travels a selected distance after initial engagement with the body, the arrangment of shock absorbing material in the compartments being selected for causing the vehicle to continue generally along its initial travel direction.
