    • The present invention provides a method of determining the strength of a signal between a node (1011, 1012, 101N) and a gateway (107) in a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) (1). The method at least comprises detecting proximity of the respective node (1011) to a mobile electronic device (202) by detecting an LPWAN signal of the respective node above a predetermined threshold value with the mobile electronic device (202), transmitting (I) a control signal (201) from the mobile electronic device (202) to the respective node (1011) requesting quality-of-signal data (106) from the respective node (1011), the quality-of-signal data (106) representing the strength of the signal between the respective node (1011) and the gateway (107), transmitting (II) the quality-of-signal data (106) from the respective node (1011) to the mobile electronic device (202), and displaying the quality-of-signal data (106) via a user interface (203) of the mobile electronic device (202). This allows a user of the mobile electronic device to check the signal quality of the node without having to come into physical contact with the node, for example by connecting a test device to the node via a cable. Thus the signal quality of the node can be checked even if it is in a remote or inaccessible location. The invention also provides a mobile electronic device for use with an LPWAN to check the signal quality of the node, a node for use in an LPWAN which can be checked in this manner, an LPWAN comprising such a node, and a computer program product or a program code or system for operating such a mobile electronic device or for operating such a node.

    • The present invention provides a method of and system for transmitting a one-time password in an electronic message. The method at least comprises putting the one-time password in an electronic messaging service ( e.g . SMS, MMS) message, identifying a type of mobile electronic device of an intended recipient of the one-time password, optimizing a display format of the electronic message to the type of mobile device, transmitting the message to the mobile device, and displaying at least a part of the message in the optimized display format on a screen of the mobile device in a standby or locked mode of the screen. The system at least comprises an electronic messaging service server (101) configured to put the one-time password in an electronic messaging service message (103, 104, 105, 106) and to transmit the message, a mobile electronic device (107, 109, 111, 113) of an intended recipient of the one-time password, wherein the device comprises a screen having at least one of a standby mode and a locked mode and the device is configured to receive the message and to display it in the standby or locked mode of the screen, an identifier associating a type of the mobile electronic device with the intended recipient, and an optimizer of a display format of the electronic message to the type of the mobile electronic device of the intended recipient. Thus the intended recipient may view the part of the message displayed on the screen of their device in a format which is optimized to the screen, even when the screen is in a standby or locked mode, and can therefore complete an authentication process for a particular session or transaction using the one-time password, without having to activate the device or open the message.

    • The present invention provides a haptic feedback device comprising a touch-sensitive display screen (1) and a magnetic loop actuator (2). The touch-sensitive display screen (1) has a touchable surface coated with a transparent film which is able to provide a variable surface friction to the touchable surface in response to an externally applied electromagnetic field. The magnetic loop actuator (2) is for applying the electromagnetic field to the film to vary the surface friction of the touchable surface. The magnetic loop actuator (2) is spatially separated from the touch-sensitive display screen (1). In a preferred embodiment, the haptic feedback device further comprises a driver module (12) to drive the magnetic loop actuator (2) to generate the electromagnetic field, a triggering module (17) to trigger the driver module (12), and an application (18) to receive a user input from the touch-sensitive display screen (1), to determine a haptic output to the user in response thereto, and to output a control signal to the triggering module (17) to vary the surface friction of the touchable surface according to the haptic output thus determined. The touch-sensitive display screen (1) and the magnetic loop actuator (2) may be installed as separate components in an electronic device (4) or the magnetic loop actuator (2) may be maintained external to an electronic device (4) comprising such a touch-sensitive display screen (1). In this way, the surface friction of the touch-sensitive display screen (1) may be varied to provide haptic feedback to a user without requiring a special construction of the touch-sensitive display screen (1).
