    • The present invention pertains to a modulation apparatus and method in which the modulation apparatus is realized with a simple circuit structure and is easily applicable to other systems. A pattern conversion unit 32 converts data having a basic data length of 2 bits supplied from a DSV control bit determination and insertion unit 31 into a variable-length code having a basic code length of 3 bits in accordance with a conversion table. A minimum-run-length limitation code detection unit 33 detects, from a data sequence containing a DSV control bit, the position of minimum runs consecutive from a channel bit string converted by the pattern conversion unit 32. A consecutive-minimum-run replacement unit 34 replaces a predetermined portion of the channel bit string supplied from the pattern conversion unit 32 for a predetermined pattern based on the position information supplied from the minimum-run-length limitation code detection unit 33, and limits the minimum run length to a predetermined number or less. The present invention is applicable to a modulation apparatus.

    • Provided is an acoustic transducer which is used by being fitted into an ear of a listener, is formed in a compact and lightweight shape, and preferably prevents re-reflection of a sound wave.
An acoustic transducer 100 is formed of a film-shaped material having an expanding and contracting action and includes a cylindrical acoustic transducing element 101. The cylindrical acoustic transducing element 101 also functions as a sound guide tube. The acoustic transducing element 101 prevents re-reflection of the sound wave reflected by an eardrum when the sound wave has been generated and prevents localization phenomenon and a feeling of pressure in auditory sense. Also, since the acoustic transducing element 101 is formed in a compact and lightweight shape, the acoustic transducing element 101 generates the sound wave for directly reaching the eardrum or collects the sound at a place near the eardrum without a feeling of foreign materials in a case where a person wears the acoustic transducing element 101 the an ear.

    • A data encoding method for converting a (m i) bit based data word string into a (n i) bit based codeword string. The encoding method receives a (m i) bit based data word string by a shift register 1, decides a constraint length specifying the length of a data word which is to be converted by an encoder 2, and decides on which number of bits as counted from the leading end of the m bits falls the leading end bit of the data word which is to be converted. The encoding method selects, by a selector 3, one of a plurality of conversion tables constituting variable length tables and at least satisfying the minimum run length d , in accordance with the constraint length and the above results of decision. The encoding method also generates a codeword corresponding to the data word, now to be converted, in accordance with the selected conversion table. The encoding method assures a larger value of the product of the minimum length between transitions and the window margin, thus enabling data to be recorded to a higher density on an information recording medium.
