The machine (10) has a heating device (18) with a substantially vertical heated surface (20) and the yarn (23) is fed along a yarn path upwardly from a creel (11) to an inlet end (32) of the heating device (18), downwardly in contact with the heated surface (20), through a cooling device (19, 39) and to a false twisting device (16), and the yarn path between the heating device (18) and the false twisting device (16) is inclined to the vertical out of the plane of the heating surface (20). The yarn path through the cooling device (19, 39) is curved, either along a curved track (19) or helically around the surface of a straight tube (39).

    • In a textile yarn texturing machine (10), a cooling arrangement (19) for the heated false-twisted yarn (23) is provided by a tube (21) having a guide (38) at the inlet end and a guide (38) on the diametrically opposed side of the tube (21) at the outlet end to guide the yarn (23) in a helical path around the outer surface of the tube (21). The yarn (23) makes one-half turn around the tube (21) during its travel from the inlet end to the outlet end. The tube (21) may form the second part (21) of the cooling arrangement (19) and is preferably inclined downwardly from a horizontally disposed first part (20) towards the false twist device (16). The cooling arrangement (19) or at least the first part (20) is aligned with the preferably horizontally disposed heater (18) located above the operator's aisle (17) of the machine (10).

    • In a yarn false twist texturing process in which yarn (17) is passed through heating and cooling zones (14, 15) to a false twist device (16), the yarn (17) is passed in a helical path around a cylinder (19) at opposed ends of which yarn guides (26, 27) are disposed to provide the helical path, preferably through the cooling zone (15). In order to raise the surge speed at which the process becomes unstable, at least one of the yarn guides (26) is positionally adjustable relative to another guide (27) and/or a third guide (23) is located between the other two (26, 27) so as to increase the helix angle of the yarn path and the effective angle of wrap around a cylindrical cooling device (19) on which the guides (23, 26, 27) are mounted. The cooling cylinder (19) may be a tube to which suction (22) is applied to draw fumes from the yarn (17) as it passes over a port (21) in the tube (19) and to draw ambient air into the tube (19) to assist the cooling effect. The non-abrupt changes in direction of the yarn path allows the twist to run back through the cooling and heating zones (15, 14).
