摘要： A method of manufacturing a water barrier fabric, in flexible or rigid form, and articles manufactured thereby, formed by dispersing a water-absorbent material (20), in powdered or granular form, among a mass of fibers (14) during the formation of a loose mat (18) of said fibers (14), to homogeneously disperse the powdered or granular water-absorbent material (20) above, below and on each side of the fibers (14) forming the mat (18), and thereafter densifying and structurally consolidating the mat (18), to secure the fibers (14) in position surrounding and entrapping the water-absorbent material (20), such as by sewing, quilting, needle punching or otherwise bonding the fibers (14) into a consolidated, structurally secure fabric (46) at least partially filled with the powdered or granular water-absorbent material (20). In a preferred embodiment, one, or both, major surfaces of the fabric (46) is coated with a water-insoluble adhesive to substantially increase the tensile strength of the fabric (46) and to prevent shifting of fibers (14) when installed on sloping surfaces.

摘要： There is disclosed a pouch (10) for absorbing liquids. In one embodiment, the pouch is formed from two distinct layers (28, 28A) of sheet material - one (28A) including thermoplastic fibres for the purpose of heat sealing and the other a tearable tissue paper (28) capable of tearing upon expansion of the water-absorbent material (26) contained between the sheet material layers (28, 28A). In another embodiment, the pouch is manufactured to include a relatively weak sealed seam, (162) e.g., formed by heat sealing adjacent sheet material layers together, that has a weaker bonding strength than one or more other sealed seams, such that upon expansion of the water-absorbent material (156), the relatively weak seam (162) separates or delaminates into its separate layers to allow the absorbent (156) to spread beyond the pouch (150) at the relative weak seam. In both embodiments, the pouches contain an inner layer of water-insoluble, liquid-absorbing material, such as cross-linked sodium polyacrylate.

摘要： Geocomposite articles that can provide a barrier against high conductivity water e.g., ocean water, are described and their method of manufacture, for waterproofing surfaces that contact high conductivity water. The geocomposite article mat includes a woven or nonwoven geotextile sheet or mat containing a powdered or granular partially cross-linked acrylamide/acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer across its entire major surface(s). The powdered or granular copolymer has an unexpectedly high free-swell when hydrated with High Conductivity water, such as ocean water. A liquid-impermeable cover sheet is adhered to the upper major surfaces of the filled copolymer-carrying geotextile to provide a primary high conductivity water barrier layer that, if ruptured, is sealed by the swell of an underlying layer of water-insoluble, partially cross-linked acrylamide/acrylic acid copolymer.

摘要： Herein is disclosed a flue gas scrubbing composition, a method of using the flue gas scrubbing composition, and a method of entombing mercury collected with the flue gas scrubbing composition. The flue gas scrubbing composition includes an admixture of a mercury sorbent material that comprises a clay, copper, and sulfur; and lime that comprises calcium oxide and/or calcium hydroxide. The method of collecting mercury from a flue gas includes injecting the flue gas scrubbing composition of any one of the preceding claims into a flue duct comprising the flue gas; reacting the mercury sorbent material with mercury in the flue gas to form a mercury-sorbed material and thereby reducing the concentration of mercury in the flue gas; reacting the lime with SO2, SO3, and/or HCl in the flue gas to form a calcium sulfate and/or a calcium chloride; and collecting a mixture that includes the mercury-sorbed material. The method of entombing mercury includes mixing the collected mixture of any one of claims 6 to 9 with water to form a freshly mixed concrete; and casting the freshly mixed concrete into a form.
