    • An apparatus for generating a plasma jet comprises a gas containment vessel (12) having a cylindrical wall (14) extending along a central axis (A) and made from electrically conductive material, the gas containment vessel forming an outer electrode. and an internal electrode (20) arranged inside the gas containment vessel. The apparatus further comprises means for flowing at a controlled rate a gas into the gas containment vessel (12); and
      a power source (24) to create a plasma between the electrodes.
      Remarkably, the internal electrode (20) is a grid-like member and an outlet port (18) is arranged in the cylindrical wall (14) of the gas containment vessel. The apparatus is configured to allow the plasma formed within the vessel to emerge, through the outlet port (18), from the vessel as a plasma jet in a direction substantially perpendicular to central axis (A).
