    • A plasma display device has a display panel (1) including first to third electrodes (2-4). Sustaining discharge signals that are mutually out of phase are applied alternately to adjoining ones of the first electrodes (2) and adjoining ones of the second electrodes (3) respectively. Consequently, first display cells are defined between the second electrodes (3) and the first electrodes (2) on one side of the second electrodes (3), and second display cells are defined between the second electrodes (3) and the first electrodes (2) on the other side of the second electrodes (3). Interlacing where the first display cells and second display cells are allowed alternately and repeatedly to glow for display is carried out. A drive circuit for driving the second electrodes (3) includes a first drive circuit (16) for outputting a pulsating voltage to be applied to the odd-numbered second electrodes (3), a second drive circuit (17) for outputting a pulsating voltage to be applied to the even-numbered second electrodes (3), and third circuits associated with the second electrodes (3) for applying the pulsating voltages, which are output from the first drive circuit (16) and second drive circuit (17), to the second electrodes (3), and for applying a scanning signal selectively to the second electrodes (3). In the plasma display device, the third circuits are grouped into third odd circuits to be connected to the odd-numbered ones of the second electrodes (3), and third even circuits to be connected to the even-numbered ones of the second electrodes (3). The third odd circuits are integrated into at least one chip, and the third even circuits are integrated into at least one chip.
      In such a PDP, in which different sustaining discharge signals are applied to odd-numbered ones of X electrodes and Y electrodes and even-numbered ones thereof respectively, the wiring in a drive circuit for driving the X electrodes or Y electrodes can be simplified, and a scan driver can thus be formed with an IC or ICs.

    • A method of driving a plasma display panel, the method comprising:

      a reset period in which a reset discharge is carried out in a plurality of discharge cells by applying prescribed voltages to the sustain electrodes X i , scan electrodes Y n , and address electrodes A j to accomplish a uniform charge distribution among the plurality of discharge cells;
      an address period in which a write discharge is carried out in selected discharge cells between the scan electrodes Y n and the address electrodes A j , thereby performing selective writing that matches display data; and
      a sustain discharge period in which sustain discharge pulses are applied between the sustain electrodes X i and the scan electrodes Y n , thereby causing a discharge glow for the display at the discharge cells in which the writing has been performed in the address period, wherein potential differences between the odd-numbered sustain electrodes X 2i-1 and the even-numbered scan electrodes Y 2n and between the even-numbered sustain electrodes X 2i and the odd-numbered scan electrodes Y 2n-1 during the reset period of an odd field in which a display is produced between the odd-numbered sustain electrodes X 2i-1 and scan electrodes Y 2n-1 and between even-numbered sustain electrodes X 2i and scan electrodes Y 2n , and potential differences between the odd-numbered sustain electrodes X 2i-1 and scan electrodes Y 2n-1 and between the even-numbererd sustain electrodes X 2i and scan electrodes Y 2n during the reset period of an even field in which a display is produced between the odd-numbered sustain electrodes X 2i-1 and even-numbered scan electrodes Y 2n and between the even-numbered sustain electrodes X 2i and odd-numbered scan electrodes Y 2n-1 , are each held below a discharge initiating voltage between the respective electrodes.

    • An AC plasma display panel includes a plurality of display lines, each line having parallel first (X) and second (Y) electrodes, and third electrodes crossing the first and second electrodes. In a write addressing method of driving the panel (Figure 18), during a selective write discharge operation carried out on a selected display line, a predetermined voltage (V y ) is applied to the respective second electrodes (Y) of non-selected display lines such that the resulting potential difference (V y ) between the second electrode of the selected display line and the second electrode of each non-selected display line is less than the potential difference brought about between the respective first and second electrodes of a display line by application thereto of a sustain discharge pulse. Similarly, in an erase addressing method of driving the panel (Figure 20), during a selective erase discharge operation carried out on a selected display line, the same predetermined voltage (V y ) is applied to the respective second electrodes (Y) of non-selected display lines. The predetermined voltage (V y ) may be equal to an addressing voltage (V a ) applied to the third electrodes.
      These driving methods are applicable both to X-Y-Y-X electrode-arrangement and to X-Y-X-Y electrode-arrangement PDPs to prevent abnormal discharges.
