摘要： In a system and method for preparing digital media for delivery, outgoing digital media (108) are automatedly inserted into empty digital media envelopes. A scanner scans a code on the digital media. Based on the code, the system determines an intended delivery address. The system applies delivery address information, as determined from the scanned code, to the filled envelopes. The method and system may also include steps and components for receiving and sorting incoming digital media. Incoming digital media (102) are sorted to determine which (107) are to be re-used as outgoing digital media for the outgoing aspect of the system. Incoming digital media (102) are scanned to identify senders. The system identifies what new digital media the sender would like to receive in place of the returned digital media. It is determined which received digital media can be re-used to satisfy outgoing requests. The requested outgoing digital media (107) are sorted from the incoming digital media (102).

In operation, an initial determination is made as to whether the article has been previously handled and is subject to a redirection or ad hoc forwarding. If the article is subject to as hoc forwarding, another determination is made whether the article recipient has maintained an account to cover the expense of the forwarding. If no account is present, the recipient is given the option, for a limited time, to establish such an account. If no account is established within that time, the article is not delivered and may be destroyed. If an account is present, the article is forwarded and the account debited.

The system includes at least one mailpiece processing system for generating mailpieces wherein the mailpiece processing system is configured to generate an electronic file containing the processing details for its generated mailpieces. Also included is at least one imaging device for acquiring images of the generated mailpieces. A database is provided for storing the mailpiece processing and tracking details along with the acquired images. An electronic communication system links the database to: a postal delivery system; the at least one mailpiece processing system and to the mailpiece imaging device. A computer is coupled to the database and is configured to create a searchable electronic catalog whereby the respective mailpiece processing and tracking details and the acquired image for each mailpiece are associated with one another for searching by a user.

Identification code producing equipment prints an encrypted code which identifies the source of the individual mail piece on each mail piece in a batch of mail. When the mailer submits the mailing to the Postal service, recording equipment captures and records the identity of the person submitting the mail. Verification equipment samples the batch of mail and reads the identification code on each mail piece in the sample. Paperwork submitted with the mailing also contains an encrypted code which is scanned and compared to the identification code on the mail pieces to verify the origin of the mailing. Any mail piece that does not have a mark or that has the wrong code is rejected.

摘要： A secure communication system for transmission of messages utilises postage meters (10) as terminals of the system. The postage meters include means (13) for input of postage amount, an encryptor (26) to encrypt postage information to be printed by a printer (21) of the meter. The input means are used for input of a message, the encryptor encrypts the message with a key unique for an intended recipient terminal and the printer prints the encrypted message on a mail item (20). The terminals also are provided with reading means (31; 32) to read a received encrypted message (30) and the encryption means (26) is utilised to decrypt the received encrypted message using the unique key of the recipient terminal.
