摘要： A removable locking mechanism for a fifth wheel hitch is provided which includes a mounting plate removably attachable within a fifth wheel chassis formed to support a fifth wheel hitch plate that has an aperture in the load surface thereof. The mounting plate is formed with a u-shaped throat dimensioned to receive a trailer kingpin and a top surface configured to be co-planar with the fifth wheel hitch plate load surface when seated within the chassis. A locking mechanism for retaining the kingpin against said closed end of the throat is mounted to the underside of the mounting plate and includes a cam arm; and a bumper arm pivotally attached to the cam arm configured to engage a bumper stop formed in the mounting plate underside; a sliding jaw member slidably mounted to the cam arm; and a secondary lock member for preventing unintended disengagement of the lock mechanism.

The electronic system determines whether the trailer hitch assemblies is properly coupled to the trailer, and comprises a first magnet creating a first magnetic flux, and a first Hall-effect sensor for sensing the position of the kingpin of the trailer relative to the throat of the hitch plate by measuring the first magnetic flux. The system further comprises a control circuit operably coupled with the first Hall-effect sensor in determining whether the first magnetic flux indicates a proper location of the kingpin of the trailer relative to the throat of the hitch plate. The electronic system discriminates between the kingpin and foreign materials, thereby assuring proper locking of the locking mechanism.

According to the invention, the towing vehicle (2) is provided with an alternating voltage generator for producing a carrier signal, a signal modulator modulates the control data on the carrier signal, and a transmitter (7) is arranged in the fifthwheel pick-up plate (5) of the towing vehicle (2), for transmitting the carrier signal with the modulated control data to a transmitter (7, 8) in the region of the kingpin (6) of the semitrailer (3). A demodulator in the semitrailer (3) splits the total signal transmitted by inductive coupling into an energy-carrying power supply voltage and control data, the power supply voltage being provided for the power supply of a component (9) in the semitrailer (3).
