    • The circuit comprises a first and a second pair of inputs (2, 2′; 3, 3′) and at least three pairs of outputs (20, 20′; 24, 24′; 21, 21′). The pairs of inputs serve to receive pairs of two input signals (V₁, V 1c , V₅, V 5c ) which are substantially complementary to one another. At least two pairs of outputs (20, 20′; 24 , 24′) serve to supply pairs of two substantially complementary output signals. A first output (21) of the third pair of outputs (21, 21′) is coupled to a first input (2) of the first pair of inputs (2, 2′). The second output (21′) of the third pair of inputs is connected to a circuit node which is not one of the inputs of the first pair of inputs.
      This node is for example the first input (3′) of the second pair of inputs (Figure 9). Another possibility is to couple node to one end (38) of the impedance element (32) which has its other end coupled to the second input (2′) of the first pair of inputs.

    • Finite audio and video signals are subjected to a digitizing code format and converted into blocks of audio and video words respectively. For the transmission of these blocks via a record carrier (2), for example a compact disc, the words are arranged in frames. Each frame has a frame header (8.1) and a data field (8.2). Such a data field contains information words in the form of either audio words or video words. The header indicates whether the associated data field contains audio words or video words. At least two audio signals associated with a video signal are recorded on the record carrier. An example of this is a "slide show" in which the explanatory text is available in two or more languages (e for English, ffor French). The frame header of the frames containing an encoded audio signal also indicate to which one of the two or more audio signals the information words in an audio frame belong. Further, reference signals and additional frames (6) are recorded in the record carrier. For each of the two or more audio signals associated with a picture (or video) signal the additional frames contain time information on the time interval between the instant of detection of a reference signal after reading and the instant at which a picture signal read is to be displayed on a monitor (50). An apparatus for recording or reproducing the above signals is described.

    • When, for example, MAC signals ( inter alia C-MAC or D2-MAC signals) are recorded directly on a video recor­der and no special steps are taken, information will be lost as a result of the change-over from recording by means of one write head (7) to recording by means of an­other write head (8). The relevant signals to be recorded comprise a sequence of lines with a first signal block (F i ) containing a line-synchronising signal and at least one additional signal, and a second signal block (S i ) con­taining the chrominance and luminance information of the video signal. In accordance with the inventive step specific first signal blocks (F₁, F i , F j , F k ) or at least the additional signals of these first signal blocks are accommo­dated in a second signal block (S n ) of a non-relevant video line and are subsequently recorded on the record carrier. After the relevant second signal block (S n ) has been read from the record carrier the relevant first signal blocks, or at least the additional signals of these first signal blocks, are extracted from the second signal block and re-inserted into the data stream of first signal blocks at their original locations. The relevant first signal blocks may be those first signal blocks during which the heads are switched (Fig. 1a and 1b) or may be other (subsequent, when viewed in the time) first signal blocks (F n-3 to F n ) which can no longer be inserted into the data stream of the first signal blocks because these first signal blocks, during which head switching is effected, have been repeated earlier in the data stream (Figs. 7a and 7b).

    • The device for deriving a synchronizing signal comprises a synchronizing signal detector (1), an output (3) of which is coupled both directly and via a delay unit (18) to inputs (4 and 19, respectively) of a signal combination unit (5). The output (6) thereof is coupled to an input (7) of a flywheel counter (8). One output (9) of the flywheel counter (8) supplies the synchronizing signal. Another output (9) is coupled to an input (11) of the signal combination unit (5). The first input (4) and the second input (11) of the combination unit (5) are coupled to inputs of a time slot circuit (12). The first input (4) and the third input (19) of the combination unit (5) are coupled to inputs (20, 21) of a further combination unit (14). The output of the time slot circuit (12) is also coupled to an input (13) of the combination unit (14).The delay time (T) of the delay unit (18) is equal to n times the period of the synchronizing signal. Therefore the device is less sensitive to "false lock" and can capture the synchronization rapidly again after a loss of synchronization.
