摘要： The control device, for a carbon arc lamp (used eg for measuring the speed of light in a small sample of material), stabilises the lamp and has the lower of its two vertical electrodes fixed at its bottom end to a holder which is suspended on the lamp's base. The upper end of the upper electrode is attached to a control rod. A counterweight is attached to a wire that passes over a roller and is fixed at its other end to the ring that holds the control rod. The counterweight has a core situated in a magnetic coil that moves it up and down.

Arc lamps.-In a lamp to be used in conjunction with daylight for photography, and having an operating - solenoid A placed at about the level of the arc B and behind a reflector C so as to minimize daylight shadow, a long lever D is linked at one end to the solenoidcore E and at its other end is forked and connected by symmetricallyarranged links to a clutch F acting on the upper carbon J, the holder of which runs on fixed guides K, K . The lever D may work on a knife-edge, and gives a long stroke for a small angular movement. A dashpot M is connected to the lever. Magnetic disturbance of the arc is avoided by having the solenoid A parallel with the carbons and level with the arc. The guide rods K, K are in the same plane as the arc and solenoid, and the reflector C is small, though larger than the solenoid A. As the lamp has a low centre of gravity, it can conveniently be suspended by an eye O or attached. by the lower part of the frame P to a pedestal.
