    • A mobile telephone has a key field with selection keys and function keys, a display field, and transmission/reception equipment potentially integrated in a hand-held control part of the mobile telephone. A soft key referenced with the designation “message” in a stand by mode flashes upon reception of a message via short message service or caller line identification. A message menu is displayed when the soft key is pressed, this message menu containing messages about a voice message, a text message including the plurality of new or old messages and also offering the plurality of known callers, of unknown callers and a possibility of sending messages. Voice messages, short messages and caller line identification displays flash when new messages that have not yet been read have been received. A scroll system allows users to scroll to the desired message and press either a key “listen” or “view”. A call to the voice message service is initiated by pressing the key “listen” and remaining access control is in agreement with the voice message service center by using voice or coded cryptocommands. The users are invited upon initial access to their voice message center to activate a predetermined key and input a required telephone number.

    • A network based information system has a server or other source management system connected to the network and to an information database, and a portable communication device enabled to access the server on the network by keypad entry, and to indicate geographic position upon access. The system is characterized in that the keypad is graphically mapped for direction, and the server, in response to a call placed from the portable communication device, including keypad input indicating direction, accesses the database for information associated with the geographic position and the direction, and transmits that information to the portable communication device. Other criteria, such as distance and information type may also be mapped and used in retrieving information. In the case of voice-capable devices, information is rendered as speech to be transmitted to the communication device.

    • A system and method for notifying a remote device of a low battery capacity condition in a wireless communications system is disclosed. A detector monitors the capacity of the battery in a wireless device receiving operational power from the battery for a low capacity condition. A control system coupled to the detector sends a low battery capacity status signal to the remote device upon detection a low battery capacity condition. While the battery is in a low capacity condition, communications between the wireless device and the remote device may be maintained until the low battery capacity condition is corrected.

    • A cell assignment process strives to minimize the number of cells assigned to mobile terminals involved in any given group call session in both circuit-switched and packet-data environments. In one embodiment, when a cell assignment trigger event is encountered during a group call, the decision whether to change cells or not is based at least in part upon whether the relevant cell is already participating in that group call session with another mobile terminal or not. If so, the cell assignment process preferentially selects such a cell for switching to or avoids changing cell assignment if already assigned there. In another embodiment other cells involved in the group call session are actively sought out and the cell assignments of the mobile terminals involved in the group call session are changed to those cells, even when the signal quality may be acceptable in the current cell. The mobile terminals involved in group call sessions may optionally be given preferential priority when switching cells so as to help minimize disruption to the group call session. Thus, the mobile terminals involved in the group call session are gradually urged toward congregating in the fewest possible cells under the circumstances. Accordingly, the present invention helps provide better service with less of a system capacity penalty for group call sessions.

    • A system and method for locating mobile telephone devices via the Web. The mobile telephone device obtains and provides its location to a Web server in GPS latitude and longitude format. The communication between the Web server and the mobile telephone device may be through a browser or through mobile originated short message service. The Web server records the location information along with the time of receipt. Over time, the Web server may record several locations for a single mobile telephone device so that the progress of the mobile unit may be mapped. The information contained in the Web server is accessible to devices with Web browsing capabilities. A Web browsing device queries the Web server for location information pertaining to a particular mobile telephone device. The Web server may require authorization for such information before sending the location to the requesting device. The location information may be sent in a text only format or as text with graphics, depending on the display capabilities of the requesting Web browsing device.
