    • In accordance with the principles of the present invention, in addition to conventional use of frequency division multiplexed upper and lower side bands, the spectral area occupied by the analog host will be utilized by applying a one-dimensional modulation, e.g., pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) as opposed to the conventional use of a two-dimensional modulation, e.g., quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Furthermore, the analog and digital information within the analog host bandwidth may be combined in quadrature to keep the signals orthogonal. Thus, should one side band under the analog carrier be deteriorated or obliterated by adjacent channel interference, the other side band under the analog carrier can still provide useful data and hence better digital audio codec performance. By transmitting one or two digital data streams asymmetrically with respect to the center frequency, particular digital side bands can be rendered useless as environmental conditions warrant (e.g., as they become detrimentally affected by adjacent channel interference), reducing bandwidth capacity but not affecting the quality of the received digital data transmitted in any of the remaining digital side band regions.

    • Direct up-conversion of a signal is accomplished using a sampling pulse generator circuit and a gated differential amplifier, enabled by the sampling signal. When not enabled, the output of the differential amplifier is pulled to zero. The sampling pulse is generated from a base frequency sine wave which is squared with a limiting amplifier, and further passed through one or more frequency doublers producing a times two signal, a times four signal and so on. The squared base frequency and frequency doubled signals are logically ORed to produce a short duration pulse which repeats at the frequency of the base signal. The resulting output is an amplitude modulated pulse doublet time domain waveform.

    • A modulator produces a modulated signal including a carrier and data signals representing data bits. The data signals include at least two in-phase modulating pulses which have different shapes and which are interfering in time and frequency; the data signals further include at least two quadrature modulating pulses which have different shapes and which are interfering in time and frequency. The modulator includes a filter for producing each shape of pulse, and combining circuits for combining the pulses with each other and with a carrier. The demodulator (or receiver) receives the combined signal and separates the pulses from the carrier. The demodulator further includes filters for separating the pulses, and a circuit for processing the pulses to reproduce the data bits. The processing circuit preferably includes one or more maximum likelihood sequence estimation equalizers.

In the method and apparatus, scaling constants applied to the input signal prior to digital-to-analog conversion change according to the time-varying periodic probability density function (pdf) of the input signal.
