    • A switching amplifier generates noise at its switching frequency and harmonics thereof. The noise at these harmonics, for an audio amplifier, will be generated with significant amplitude in the AM band. Thus, an AM tuner will experience interference problems if the tuner frequency is sufficiently close to one of these harmonics. To avoid this problem the switching frequency of the switching amplifier is chosen based on the tuner frequency. Thus, the switching frequency is chosen to avoid having harmonics at or too near the chosen tuner frequency. The switching amplifier is disabled when the tuner is in seek or scan mode. Instead of using the tuner frequency to determine what switching frequency should be used to avoid interference, the interference can be detected directly to cause a change in the switching frequency and thus remove the interference.

    • A Class D switching audio amplifier incorporating four state modulation, input-to-output drive and feedback signal isolation, dual topology output filtration, and a low inductance board layout. The four state modulation results in a common mode voltage in the absence of audio. The input-to-output isolation of drive and feedback signals allows for elimination of large power transformers in applications without user-accessible outputs. Such isolation may make use of optical isolators. The output filter includes common mode and differential topology filter stages. The low inductance board layout treats the amplifier and power supply boards as modules, and utilizes both sides of the amplifier board in order to minimize trace length.

    • A Class D amplifier device with reduced power consumption uses a passive RC network. The output of the RC network directly feeds a comparator resulting in increased efficiency. The RC network is configured to perform several functions, including the low pass filtering of the feedback signal to remove high frequency/high amplitude clock components and provides a DC path from its output to reduce duty cycle errors. Additionally, the input signal receives low pass filtering, creating a generally flat frequency response. Finally, the clock signal is filtered to generate a triangle wave of good linearity and appropriate amplitude.

    • A modulated signal is connected to a full bridge switching amplifier (16, 18, 28, 30) and is compensated to remove a predetermined frequency and its odd harmonics. The compensation inverts and delays (26) a signal that is connected to a first half of the full bridge and applies the delayed inverted signal to a second half of the full bridge. By delaying by an odd number of half cycles, the carrier and its odd harmonics are cancelled because the same signal exists on both sides of the full bridge output. When these two same signals are subtracted by the full bridge action, the carrier and odd harmonics are suppressed. Spectral nulls may be provided for various signal applications, not just audio, and when various types of modulation techniques are used, such as PWM and PDM.

    • A class D amplifier uses a summation of two or more PWM output stages to achieve an increased dynamic range and improved linearity for any given clock operating speed. The amplifier accepts a digital data stream as its input, such as from a compact disk, or other compatible media, at a data rate, Fa, that could be 44.1 kHz, 96 kHz, or any other rate appropriate for audio data. In the preferred embodiment, the input audio data resolution, N bits, would be split into two data samples, of J and K. Internal switching frequency, Fs, switches the PWM with an over sampling factor M, where Fs=M*Fa. The time resolution of the PWM is determined by a precision oscillator that operates at Fc=Fs*(max(J,K)−log2(M)+1). The J most significant bits would be routed to a power PWM stage operated at a DC voltage of VHI. The K least significant bits are routed to a finesse PWM stage operated at a DC voltage of VLO. The ratio of VLO to VHI will be appropriate for the ratio of K and J so the summation of the power PWM stage and the finesse PWM stage will provide the full range of N bits. This summation is accomplished with a low pass filter and time-division multiplexing of the two PWM stages. A micro controller (MCU) is used to apply a sample packet distribution algorithm to provide more resolution by reducing quantization noise in the audio band of interest. The MCU is also used to calibrate the VLO or VHI, or to calibrate the PWM timing of the two PWM stages to achieve appropriate performance.

    • A system and method for compensating switched mode amplifiers. The amplifier system includes an adaptive filter coupled to the output of circuitry that recovers the analog signal from the output of the switching amplifier circuitry. The adaptive filter derives an inverse transfer function of the forward path through the system. The derived inverse transfer function is used to generate a coefficient map which a compensation filter responsively compensates for from variations in the output load of the amplifier system. In the disclosed method, the deriving the inverse transfer function may further include calibrating the adaptive filter continuously, at system startup or in response to user demand.
