    • A high phase order induction machine drive system is disclosed. This has an inverter system for the synthesis of a plurality of phases of alternating current output, and a N-phase induction motor (N is greater than 3). The inverter system has N terminals, numbered from 1 to N. Each motor phase is electrically connected to a pair of inverter terminals. One connection is made to a first inverter terminal and the other connection is made to a second inverter terminal. The number of inverter terminals (in order of electrical phase angle) between the first terminal and the second terminal is S+1, where S is the skip number). The phase angle difference between the pair of inverter terminals to which each motor phase is connected is identical for each motor phase.

    • Disclosed herein is a method and system for initializing a rotating device such as an electronically commutated electric machine. The system comprises: an electric machine; a position sensor subsystem operatively connected to the electric machine configured to measure a position and transmit a position signal to a controller. The controller executes a method initializing position for the electric machine, the method comprising: establishing a sensor subsystem datum indicative of a measurement reference point for a sensor subsystem; obtaining a calibration value corresponding to a distance to a selected magnetic reference position for the electric machine, relative to the sensor subsystem datum; and measuring a position and calculating a position delta relative to an initial reference. The method also includes: estimating an offset from the sensor subsystem datum to an initial reference; determining an absolute position estimate of the electric machine relative to the magnetic reference position. The absolute position estimate is responsive to the calibration value, the position delta, and the offset from the sensor subsystem datum to the initial reference.

    • The present invention provides apparatus, systems and methods for fail passive servo controllers. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, servo controller is used with an ALS to control an aircraft during landing procedures. In accordance with one aspect of this exemplary embodiment, upon a failure (e.g., of one of the components of ALS) servo controller fails passively rather than actively. In an exemplary embodiment, the fail passive nature of the servo unit is accomplished by providing at least two independent signal and drive current paths for controlling the servo motor. As such, the servo motor will not generate torque unless the two independent signal lanes agree. For example, when a component such as processor, difference amplifier, or PWM fails or otherwise ceases to function properly, servo motor will not runaway, but rather will fail with only minor transient movement, or alternatively, servo unit will lock at its current position. In this manner, servo motor will not generate a deviation from flight path or other significant control inputs until system monitors detect the fault and return control to the pilot.

    • A dual speed hard drive system designed to operate at the highest efficiency in the low RPM mode, and at the highest performance in the high RPM mode. To achieve the highest efficiency in the low RPM mode, the spindle motor is optimized for maximum efficiency for low RPM speeds using the standard supply voltage of +5.0 V. To achieve the highest performance, a DC—DC step up converter increases the supply voltage to beyond the standard +5.0 V supply voltage thereby allowing the spindle motor to achieve a higher RPM. A 2-stage spin up process is utilized when the spindle motor is retired to go from a stationary state to the high RPM mode. This 2-stage spin up process minimizes the power capacity requirement and the thermal rise of the DC—DC step up converter during operation.

    • A programmable motor controller for receiving three-phase input power at an input power frequency and having a polarity is presented. The controller includes a primary chopper for reversing each phase of electrical power according to a reference frequency. Each primary chopper has a power input, a signal input, and an output. The power input is electrically connected in wye connection to each phase of power. A transformer for each phase of power has primary and secondary terminals and is connected electrically by its primary terminals to the output of the primary chopper. A secondary chopper for each phase of power is configured to reverse each phase or electrical power according to the reference frequency and phase shifted according to a second reference signal. The secondary chopper has an input connected electrically to the secondary terminals of the transformer in an output connected to a winding of a motor.

    • A method for driving a brushless DC motor is disclosed in accordance with the present invention. Firstly, a driving control signal is generated based on sensed information of a motor rotor's magnetic field distribution. The driving control signal is inactive in the case that four rotor magnetic arcs are rotated more or less than critical positions of the rotor corresponding a stator. At that time, no magnetic fields are produced from the motor's stator, and thus the rotor rotates by inertial force. In another case, the driving control signal is issued in a conventional manner.

    • A motor combination system with operating method for operating as an induction motor or a stepping motor is disclosed. The disclosed system basically encompasses a switch device, an induction motor control module, and a stepping motor control module. Driving signals generated by the induction motor control module and the stepping motor control module are fed into the switch device. The induction motor control module receives a feedback signal for compensating simulation distortion when the disclosed system operates as an induction motor. The switch device is responsive to a mode selection signal to decide which driving signals being selected for driving the disclosed system for operating. In the beginning, the disclosed system operates as a stepping motor for providing torque enough for switching purpose. According to the mode selection signal, the disclosed system may switch to operate as an induction motor when the torque is large enough.
