    • Method and apparatus for accelerating a disc drive spindle motor from rest to a final operational velocity. During a low gear mode, the spindle motor is accelerated from rest to a first velocity through application of fixed duration drive pulses to the spindle motor. A high gear mode is next employed to accelerate the spindle motor from a first velocity to an intermediate velocity. Variable duration drive pulses are applied to the spindle motor each having a duration selected as a percentage of the duration of the most recently detected commutation period of the spindle motor. Once the spindle motor reaches the medium speed, commutation circuitry and back electromotive force (bemf) detection circuitry use detected bemf from the spindle motor to electronically commutate the motor to accelerate to the final operational speed.

The method and system include energizing the polyphase motor in a first predetermined commutation phase; detecting whether a zero crossing of a back electromotive force (bemf) signal corresponding to the first predetermined commutation phase occurs; sensing whether the polyphase motor advanced to a next successive commutation phase relative to the first predetermined commutation phase; and performing an acceleration procedure to accelerate the speed of the polyphase motor towards a desired speed based upon a detected zero crossing of the bemf signal and an affirmative determination that the polyphase motor advanced to a next successive commutation phase relative to the first predetermined commutation phase.

A circuit (78-80, 70-72) terminates the drive voltages in a PWM cycle when the circuit (66) for measuring measures a predetermined amount of energy that has been delivered to the motor during the PWM cycle.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling a brushless motor having a plurality of windings switched through a sequence of steps includes determining a transition time from one step to the next. The transition time is determined by detecting a zero crossing of a back emf in one of the plurality of windings. A delayed time to be added to the transition time is determined wherein the delayed time is selected according to the step in the sequence of steps being executed and is dependent on the duration of one of a preceding interval between zero crossings. A delay time proportional to a duration of a last shortest interval is supplied to follow a longest interval. A delay time proportional to a duration of a last longest interval is supplied to follow a shortest interval and a delay time proportional to a duration of a medium interval is supplied to follow a medium interval. The method may be used, for example, with a star or delta connected motor having any number of windings.
